A plea for better junk on TV

Fifty years ago this week, then Federal Communications Chairman Newton Minow famously skewered the nation's daily television programming as "a vast wasteland." Today it is still largely a wasteland, in my view, because that's mostly what people want.

New Day on Mill to host five-year anniversary

On Sunday New Day on Mill will host a fifth anniversary drop-in from 2 to 4 p.m. at 1207 Mill Street, Camden. New Day is a transitional housing program for homeless women and their families. There will be a short program at 3 p.m. featuring some former residents. Tours of the cottages will be hosted by current residents and members of the New Day Advisory Board. I was very disappointed in your recent Noted and passed comments criticizing Gov. Haley for being insensitive in not making appointments to minorities in the proportions that you felt appropriate. Pets of the week -- May 13, 2011

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a short-haired domestic kitten and an 8-week-old male border collie hound-mix puppy. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Kershaw County Aquatic Center will open for the season May 21; registration for aquatic center programs will also be accepted at this time. The pool will be open on a half-day schedule May 21-June 5, shifting to a full-day schedule June 6. The aquatic center will be closed Memorial Day and July 4.
