• We've commented before on the merry-go-round of coaches in professional sports, and that some who get fired manage to get new jobs no matter how bad their teams have been in the past. A news story pointed out recently that Norv Turner, coach of the NFL's San Diego Chargers, has managed to coach 234 games while compiling an overall losing record. Now that's what we call a survivor.

When our community chooses to come together

I had been in Kershaw County just a few months when I got one of the worst phone calls of my professional career. At about 8 a.m. on a gray Saturday morning in early December of 2007, I was coming inside from a morning run, and the phone was ringing. Camden’s Elliott named to new CCTC alumni council

Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) faculty and staff recently named Kris Elliott of Camden, to CCTC's new alumni council. Elliott, who works for Accuride Corp., joins 10 others on the council, appointed to provide direction and leadership for the new CCTC Alumni Partnership program.

Lugoff Optimist Club says thanks

It's absolutely awesome! It's incredibly unbelievable! That's what your support year after year means to the Lugoff Optimist Club. Each year we send out a letter asking for your financial help in order that elementary students can attend a play that teaches a lesson that is crucial to their school years. This year's play taught a lesson on anti-bullying.

Colonial Cup steward, Groat, passes away

Stephen Pitcher Groat, a devoted steeplechase official and the presiding steward at last month's 43rd running of the Marion duPont Scott Colonial Cup steeplechase races, died Tuesday after a long and courageous battle against cancer. He was 67.
