What bin Laden, Geronimo shared in common

Native American leaders are upset that Geronimo's name was used as code for Osama bin Laden. I respect their concern, but I don't think this particular reference is the insult that tribal leaders think it is.

A couple weeks after Navy commandoes killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, Kershaw County residents are no doubt still celebrating with their countrymen his demise. Americans are by nature a compassionate people and not attuned to celebrating death; in this instance, it is justified in every way and a cause for joy, for bin Laden will endure in infamy as one of the most cold-hearted murderers the world has ever known.

Qualifications are basis for governor's appointments

I was very disappointed in your recent Noted and passed comments criticizing Gov. Haley for being insensitive in not making appointments to minorities in the proportions that you felt appropriate. I would have thought that you, as I, would have wanted her to choose the best available for the job regardless of the category into which they fell. Whether she did or not, only time will tell.

Pets of the week -- May 13, 2011

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a short-haired domestic kitten and an 8-week-old male border collie hound-mix puppy. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Kershaw County Aquatic Center will open for the season May 21; registration for aquatic center programs will also be accepted at this time. The pool will be open on a half-day schedule May 21-June 5, shifting to a full-day schedule June 6. The aquatic center will be closed Memorial Day and July 4.

William Catoe

A service to celebrate the life of William Benjamin "Bill" Catoe, 55, of Camden, will be held Friday, May 13, at 4:00 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Keith Coates and Mike Vinson will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service in the Funeral Home and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, at the home of his sister; 1368 Sunnyhill Dr., Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Baker Funeral Home, 210 E. Hilton Street, Kershaw, S.C. 29067 to help with funeral expenses.

KCSO arrests three in auto break-in, copper thefts

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies broke up two theft rings that have plagued Kershaw County for the past several months. Sheriff Jim Matthews announced the arrests of three men: Cody Jackson, 20; Dylan Johnson, 18; and Kasey Dinkins, 19.
