Kennington presented with scholarship

Meleeia Danielle Kennington was presented with the Samantha Joy Sullivan Memorial Scholarship at the 2011 Bethune Chicken Strut. The scholarship was created in the memory of Samantha, Junior Miss Chicken Strut 2000. Samantha showed what true kindness as to everyone she met and graciously set an example for her peers as well as setting an example for girls of all ages in representing their title.

Constitutional controversy

The General Assembly will be back at the Statehouse tomorrow to continue work on items that were included in the concurrent resolution extending the session. These items are the budget, gubernatorial vetoes, conference and free conference reports, redistricting, and appointments. This end-of-session resolution is called a Sine Die Resolution because it dictates how and when the General Assembly will conclude the session. To adjourn sine die means to adjourn for an indefinite period. Albert Carter Sr.

Funeral service for Albert Samuel Carter Sr., 85, of Charlotte, North Carolina and formerly of Camden, will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, with burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia, South Carolina. Mr. Carter will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. for viewing. Ruth Henderson

Ruth Ashworth Henderson, of Lake Wateree and Camden, SC and the loving wife of Frank M. Henderson for 62 years, died on June 8, 2011. Ruth, who was an outstanding cook and hostess and who devoted most of her life to unselfishly helping and caring for others, was loved by many. Haley v. State House

As we mentioned earlier this week, Gov. Nikki Haley has several solid proposals in her package to streamline state government. The S. C. Supreme Court has ruled that she doesn't have the authority -- it was hardly a clear-cut decision, coming in at 3-2 -- to call the Senate back into session, as she attempted to do, and it now appears that South Carolinians might be in for four more years of contention between the governor and the legislature.

Three Kershaw County seniors recieve Leadership Scholarship

Meredith Toole, April Barrett, and Ashleigh Hough have been awarded the 2011 Laurie Slade Funderburk Leadership Scholarship. For a fourth year, the South Carolina General Assembly Women's Caucus has given scholarships in honor of each of the sixteen women legislators currently serving in the South Carolina General Assembly. Representative Funderburk is currently serving as the Chair of the Women's Caucus.

Rushing wins Thurmond Excellence in Law Enforcement award

A Kershaw County man who has served with the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) since 1999 is this year's winner of the state-level Strom Thurmond Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement. Saturday marks 19th annual Fire Fest

The 19th Annual Camden/Kershaw County Fire Fest will be held at Rhame Arena, 517 Bull St., on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. in Camden.
