Gamecocks: No. 1 ... again

South Carolina baseball fans have plenty to crow about with the Gamecocks having won their second consecutive national championship, a feat that has been accomplished only a few times prior to this year. In the process, the team swept through the post-season playoffs without a loss, setting a record for consecutive playoff victories. The most exciting part was that USC was not a team that just lined up and mowed down the opposition without pausing; the Gamecocks got themselves into plenty of tight spots along the way and always managed to extricate themselves without major problems occurring. Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Marie, a 3-year-old female gray tabby cat, and Trooper, a 7-year-old male Great Pyrenees dog. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Camden AAU hoop teams sweep up in Georgia

It was a good weekend for the Camden-based AAU SC Ballers (11 and under) and the TBallers (14 and under) basketball teams, which traveled to Dallas, Ga. for the Wolfpack Elite Summer Jam AAU Basketball Tournament. Both teams, coached by Willie Dubose, came away with their respective tournament championships.

Hobkirk Hill Chapter presents JROTC and Good Citizens Awards

Powers, Pierce compete for Miss South Carolina title tomorrow

Camden's Carley Powers, Miss River City, competed in swimsuit during Tuesday night's preliminary competition in The Miss South Carolina Pageant. A new Miss SC will be crowned Saturday night at the Township Auditorium. Miss Camden 2011, Sallie Pierce, competed in the evening gown portion in Tuesday night's preliminary competition at the Miss SC Pageant. Finals are tomorrow evening at the Township Auditorium in Columbia. This is the pageant's 75th Anniversary and the first time ever being held in Columbia.

Camden Rotary Club participates in Pass The Plate

The Camden Rotary Club made a donation of $2,500 as the first donor to the Pass the Plate FOOD FOR THE SOUL fund raiser. Food for the Soul director, Fred Ogburn (left) and board chair, Carl Robinson (center) accept the donation from Donny Supplee (right), president of Camden Rotary Club. Supplee says, "The Rotary International motto is service above self and what better organization can we give to locally that models this ideal than Food for the Soul! Our community will do well to come along side this ministry and support their Pass the Plate fund drive."

Mystery medical shoppers

Officials at the Obama White House have been making calls to primary care doctors in this country, trying to make appointments in an effort to find out how difficult it is to do so if they're new patients. There's just one problem: those making the calls aren't identifying themselves and are basically "mystery shoppers" who are trying to ferret information from the doctors and trying to find out whether different answers are being given if they are paying privately or have public insurance such as Medicaid.

The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society begins wreath sales for veteran’s graves

The Blaney-Elgin Museum & Historical Society are selling Christmas wreaths through Wreaths Across America for the Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The placing of wreaths on veteran's graves are a great tribute to the men and women who have given so much for the freedom enjoyed each day. This year, the Fort Jackson Cemetery needs 3,500 wreaths to cover each veteran's graves. The Wreath Laying Cemetery will be held at the cemetery on December 13, 2014, at 12 Noon.
