Ever the gentleman and sportsman, Camden's Dr. Paul Joseph Sr. was ready to congratulate one of his two playing partners, Al Underwood and Larry Conger, when the three golfers made their way onto the green at the eighth hole at the Camden Country Club last Monday to get what was an apparent hole-in-one ball.

Polk, Gilland quick to help with tending historic site

It has been my distinct pleasure and honor to serve for two years as chairman of the Camden Garden Club's project to restore and preserve the Joseph Kershaw Gravesite. Members of this hard-working committee have planted, mulched, pruned, weeded, monitored, and dedicated themselves to restoring this historically significant plot of land to the glorious state it deserves, as the final resting place of the founder of Camden, and one of the state's first patriots.

Carolina Cup

Many years ago, there was a Carolina Cup race director who insisted that every person in attendance was there to watch the horses run and that none of them were interested in the social aspects of the day -- or in taking a drink. That, of course, wasn't close to true, and there's a reason that the Cup has often been called the largest outdoor cocktail party in South Carolina. When it's dark enough you can see the stars

I could tell by my husband's face the news wasn't good. It was a scenario my doctor and I had not discussed. Prior to my surgery, I had only imagined a positive outcome. In fact, I wanted the procedure on my knee done as soon as possible. I thought, "Great. I'll be running again in about three weeks. That's good for me." Then, BAMM! (Funny how life can do that and so quickly!) It does it in such a way that we are at times completely blindsided. I should have listened to all my voicemails that ...

Snakes to be released into Wateree

I've covered news for nearly four decades in Kershaw County yet I've never been as shocked as I was upon learning yesterday that the S.C. Department of Wildlife will release more than 10,000 deadly cotton-mouth moccasins into Lake Wateree later this summer.

A disturbing trend

We wrote recently of the disturbing trend in the White House of spinning every issue through press spokesmen rather than engaging in open questioning about issues of interest to Americans. A lack of transparency isn't limited to the federal government, as the S.C. Supreme Court has recently issued two troubling rulings which limit public access in the Palmetto State.
