Dear Annie: Two years ago, my son's fiancee recommended we rotate who hosts Christmas dinner. That year, she and my son went to her mom's house, and last year they were supposed to come to mine. Instead, they went to her mom's again and were upset that I didn't want to tag along.
Annie, at the time, my 73-year-old mother was in a rehab facility.

The college football season is over and many football widows are excited about that. Now on Saturdays the honey-do list may get a little more attention. For Carolina and Clemson fans, it's been a great season. Both teams were 11-2, won exciting dramatic bowl games and were ranked in the top 10 nationally in the final coaches' poll.
We noted recently that we don't see much reason for people to own assault-type weapons and magazines that hold large amounts of ammunition. And we certainly don't see any harm to the second amendment in requiring background checks for all people who are purchasing guns. But in the ongoing debate about gun violence in this country, which has reached epidemic proportions, we are all being naive if we think instituting new laws is going to stop such violence. Once again we are faced with a horrible massacre at a school. This time it was a Connecticut elementary school. As frustrating to every American as they are devastating to those immediately involved, my prayers are with those suffering beyond my imagination.

The Camden Fire Department (CFD) recently named its professional and volunteer recipients of its Carl S. Hammond Firefighter of the Year awards. Lt. Tyheine Bennett, who joined the CFD in 2001 is the 2012 Professional Firefighter of the Year. Mark Parker, who originally joined the department in 1988, is the 2012 Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.
The Kershaw County Recreation Department is currently registering for the Youth Baseball Leagues. Boys and girls must be four by May 1, 2013 to play baseball. Here we go again. Whenever I try to offer a little helpful advice to Republican leaders, I have grown accustomed to hearing from some cranky conservative or two who blow me off, saying they're "not about to take advice from a liberal like you" -- or words to that effect.

Margaret Drakeford Smith, 89, the widow of Jared Manly Smith, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. She was born to the late Bryan and Sue Drakeford near Camden, SC on April 27, 1923. She leaves a legacy of loving kindness and the ability to see the good in everyone. If you knew her, you are richer for the experience.
