Amid recent reports from the National Council on Teacher Quality that finds "an industry of mediocrity" and asserts the country's teacher training system is badly broken, there is good news in the Kershaw County School District, and we don't blame Superintendent Frank Morgan for tooting the district's own horn in a recent column in this newspaper.

We depend on deputies

It happened again. Our sheriff, Jim Matthews, spoke before Kershaw County Council the evening of June 25. After witnessing the sheriff addressing council, I now believe the only thing left he can do is to get on his knees and beg. Throw his hands up. He has tried so hard, yet his deputies are underpaid and his department is understaffed.

I-20 eastbound lane shift coming Friday

Kershaw County residents who commute to Columbia, or vice versa, will notice a major traffic shift on I-20's eastbound lanes Friday in northeast Richland County. Beginning Friday, the new traffic shift will affect eastbound I-20 from I-77 to Spears Creek Road. This shift will not affect westbound traffic.
