The Black History Month celebration at Wateree Elementary School included an assembly where students performed skits about Ruby Bridges (the first African American to start attending an all-white school) and Larry Doby (Kershaw County's own hometown hero and Baseball Hall of Fame standout. Pets of the Week - March 11, 2011

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a 1-year-old dilute calico cat and a 10-week-old male catahoula puppy. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Fine -- no points

The state appears on the verge of legitimizing a traffic ticket system that has existed on the gray market for years in many municipalities -- writing tickets and collecting fines while not counting the violations against people's traffic records, thus saving them the higher insurance premiums that often result with speeding violations. A bill in the House of Representatives would allow police to write a warning ticket to speeders who are going less than 10 miles per hour over the limit, with the state and cities sharing the revenue.

Our news media is so full of negatives, hopelessness and tragedy. This is a story praising the goodness of God through others.
