L-E girls close in on 4-4A crown

Cell phone towers

Members of the Lake Wateree Association, voicing the sentiments of many lake residents as well as people who live in other rural areas of the county, say more cell phone towers are needed to improve communication. The association urged people to attend a Monday night meeting of the county's planning and zoning commission to make their voices heard and they're also asking citizens to show up at the next county council meeting. Bulldog Regiment to compete at State Championships Saturday

The Camden Bulldog Regiment will compete in the South Carolina Upper State Championships Saturday. The competition is held in Duncan at James F. Byrnes High School. The Bulldog Regiment recently took away several awards at the Blue Jacket Fanfare Marching Competition hosted by Aynor High School. They won first place for Best Drum Major, Best Percussion, Best Color Guard and Best Horn Line. The Bulldog Regiment placed second overall for their division, also taking home a plaque for Excellence and the Blue Jacket Fanfare.

United Way of Kershaw County to hold third annual Chili Cook-off

The United Way of Kershaw County will host its third annual Chili Cook-off on November 9 at downtown Camden's Town Green. Music will be provided by Fair Jam from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Reflections from 12 to 3 p.m. Chili will be served from 12 to 2 p.m. Premier sponsors of the event are SAFE Federal Credit Union and Lugoff Automotive Group.

Horton appointed to Southeast Board of Regents

Institute for Organization Management, the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF), has appointed Liz Horton, IOM, Executive Director of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, to the Southeast Board of Regents. Norma Jean Reed

Norma Jean Reed, 71, of Elgin, died peacefully Monday, October 14, 2013. Born in Barnwell, SC on April 22, 1942, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Idoma Granger Knopf. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Norma Jean was an active member of Blaney Baptist Church in Elgin. She loved teaching children and was greatly missed during her illness.

Quaker Cemetery and rural garden cemeteries

A group of Irish Quakers were the earliest group of colonists to settle Camden, arriving here via the Wateree River in 1751. In 1759, Quaker Samuel Wyly gave the Friends, as the Quakers were called, 4 acres of land in the southwest corner of the town limits to be used as a burying ground. The burying ground tract is noted on the 1832 plat by tract "D." Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Russell, a male 1-year-old Jack Russell mix and a female cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering.
