Boykin artist wins ‘best in show’

Denise L. Greer, an artist in Boykin, recently won "Best In Show" out of 79 entries at the Trenholm Artist's Guild (TAG) Show. It is being held at the HoFP Gallery in Columbia. The show will be on display till March 25.

Sister’s husband shames family after death

Dear Annie: My beloved sister, "Dawn," died last year following a long battle with cancer. Her husband of 43 years was a caring and capable caregiver. At the memorial service held in their church, "John" spoke tearfully of their love.

Marvin Davis

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Marvin B. Davis, of Camden, 91, with Masonic Rites and the Legion Honor Guard will be held Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 3:00 pm at First Baptist Church of Camden with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Rev. Bruce Hancock will officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 16, 2011 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at Kornegay Funeral Home, Camden Chapel. Memorials may be made in Mr. Davis's memory to First Baptist Church, 1201 Broad Street, Camden, SC 29020.

John T. Mickle

John Thomas Mickle, of Kershaw, known as J.T. to many friends and family, passed suddenly at his home on March 12, 2011. He was the son of the late Melton and Ada Shaw Mickle and the husband of Mable Harris Mickle. He was born March 5, 1923 in Kershaw, SC and educated in the public schools of Kershaw. J.T. retired from E.I. DuPont Company in Camden, S.C. with 28 years of service in the chemistry mixture laboratory.

Righting the wrongs

In a perfect world -- in a political system that functioned more as our forefathers intended rather than how it actually does -- elected officials in Washington would take on issues based on the importance of those matters rather than how the politicians would be affected at the ballot box in their next re-election campaign. But, of course, it's not a perfect world, and sometimes lawmakers can be most productive when they can plow ahead without having to worry about repercussions at the voting booth.
