Miss Camden Scholarship Program accepting applications for contestants

The Miss Camden Scholarship Program and Miss Camden Teen Program are seeking contestants for their 2012 pageant to be held Jan.7, 2012 at Camden High School. Miss Camden and Miss Camden Teen are official preliminaries to Miss South Carolina/Miss South Carolina Teen and Miss America/Miss America's Outstanding Teen.

FAC presents ‘Follies’ Beach, Global Village Photographer solo exhibit

The "girls" are hitting the beach in tonight and tomorrow's production of the popular Fine Arts Follies! Through the miracles of make-up, some fine tuning in the wardrobe department and some "shifting of shape," local business and professional men from across Kershaw County are "transformed" as they showcase their, er, talents, as the Camden Community Theatre (CCT) and the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) present the return of the riotous Fine Arts Follies tonight and tomorrow evenings at 8 p.m.

16th annual Fire Fest scheduled Saturday

The 16th annual Fire Fest 2011 will take place Saturday at Rhame City Arena in Camden. The event will kick off with a parade at 9 a.m. through downtown Camden. This family event will also include skydivers, vendors, kids' games, food, exhibitors and firefighter competition. The sky divers will enter around 9:45 a.m. and the opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Activities for children will include bounce-arounds, pony rides and games.

Pancake breakfast to be held for L-EHS journalism dept.

The Lugoff-Elgin High School journalism department will host a pancake breakfast at the FATZ in Camden, located at 212 Wall Street on Sept. 24. From 7:30 to 10 a.m. FATZ will open its doors to members of the community and transform into a hotspot for hotcakes to raise money to support the L-EHS journalism department. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to help the students of the yearbook team pay to attend local and regional scholastic journalism conferences where they can receive in-depth instruction from professionals and nationally recognized journalism teachers.

Bank of America donates money to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

The Young Leadership Committee of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is organizing a poker run to raise money for type 1 diabetes. The poker run, "Hawg-Wild for the Cure," will be held on Oct. 15.

James Richard Holmes

Haile's Funeral Home announces the death of Mr. James Richard Holmes, 88 of 1657 Cassatt Road. He passed on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Services will be conducted Monday, Sept. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at Haile's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Cedar Cemetery.

Snapshots of nature

Nature-seekers and history buffs took a closer look at the wild life that surrounds them during a recent two-hour walk through Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site and its nature loop which passes by Pine Tree Creek. Naturalist Josh Arrants, who led the walk, shared his field notes from the excursion, which was organized by the Kershaw Conservation District.
