ATEC middle school camp set for June 1-2

Middle school students looking for something fun to do this summer will have an opportunity June 1 and 2 as the Applied Technology Education Campus (ATEC) hosts its annual summer camp. The camp will give students in grades 6 through 8 the opportunity to spend time exploring a variety of ATEC programs and create projects to take home with them at the end of the two-day event.

CAMDEN – Funeral service for Thelma J. Mahoney Carter, 92, will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Powers Funeral Home with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Bruce Hancock and the Rev. Everett Recconu will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. John Stringer Rainey, Camden attorney and philanthropist, died Saturday, March 14, 2015 at age 73. He was a practicing attorney who also served as Chairman of the Board of Greenville-based Easlan Capital, Inc., a real estate development firm.

Lugoff Garden club to meet today

Lugoff Garden Club's speaker for today's meeting will be John Mowbray. The meeting will be held at Mr. & Mrs. John Mowbray's home on Quail Lane. John has grown a vegetable garden for the past 41 years and his family eats fresh vegetables all summer sharing with friends, family, and neighbors. The remainder of the vegetables from their garden are frozen or canned to enjoy the rest of the year.

Our recent front page story on homelessness in Kershaw County highlighted a part of our community we sometimes don't want to think about, much less see. We suspect it's because of homeless stereotypes: those who live on the streets or in their cars with no job or prospect of one whether due to poor life choices or ill luck.
