Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are a 10-week-old male bulldog mix puppy and a 10-week-old brown tabby kitten. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. A message for today’s youth, purity is a beautiful quality

Why is purity no longer valued? I've often asked myself this question, especially through my high school years. Now, purity has become an "old-fashioned" way of living; a virtue that is ridiculed and scoffed at. Just last semester I was laughed at for wearing my purity ring, a symbol that says I will wait for marriage.

2011 Midlands Master Naturalist course to be taught by Jenkins

The South Carolina Wildlife Federation and Clemson University have partnered to present the 2011 Midlands Master Naturalist course. Based out of Columbia, the six-week course will be held each Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. starting May 5 and ending on June 10. The course will be taught by Camden native Austin Jenkins, who will draw upon other experts to address certain topics. Jenkins is a naturalist who teaches biology at USC Sumter, and in partnership with others, he has graduated three classes of Master Naturalists in the past.

In support of literacy

North Central Middle School (NCMS) teacher Lori Pate (left) and NCMS Principal Dr. Burchell Richardson (right) receive a $4,400 grant check from International Paper employee Timmy Boone (center). Pate wrote the grant for International Paper's literacy funding that is made possible through employee sponsorship. This is the fifth year that Boone and Pate have worked together to receive funding for NCMS and literacy improvement.

Charlie's, located at 1035 Broad St. in Camden, is open every day of the week -- Sunday through Saturday -- from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 5 p.m. until the last customer is served.
