Nov. 28, the Gardening Girls Study Club celebrated Arbor Day by planting a Ginkgo tree in front of the Kershaw County Library. Reverend Barnhill gave the invocation and benediction for the tree dedication, and State Sen. Vincent Sheheen spoke about his growing up in Camden. A graveside funeral service for Elizabeth "Beth" Rowe Canada will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 3, 2012 at Quaker Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Patterson, Jr. and the Rev. • There's a legitimate reason many Republican lawmakers in Washington oppose the potential nomination of Susan Rice as secretary of state. There are too many unanswered questions about her statements following the attack on the U. S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya. Many in the GOP say they'd be more comfortable with Sen. John Kerry, who ran unsuccessfully for president in 2004. Kerry has long years of experience and significant expertise in foreign affairs. Unless President Obama simply enjoys picking fights, he'd do well to go with Kerry.

It appears the Confederate battle flag will soon be removed from the South Carolina Capitol grounds and placed in a museum where it belongs. What many believe to be a symbol of Southern heritage has now become a symbol of division. Only the flag of one sovereign nation should fly over the Capitol grounds. I endorse its removal in honor and wishes of my great-grandfather, a former Confederate soldier who wrote in his diary from Shanghai, Chine, on September 17, 1886:

General Assembly presented during the June 21 morning worship service at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church (LSUMC). State Sen. Vincent Sheheen and State Rep. Laurie Funderburk presented the resolution honoring Hagins for his work with Salkehatchie, LSUMC, and other community service organizations such as United Way and Habitat For Humanity.
