The Theta Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, International School Bandmasters Fraternity, recently presented Robert Wertz (right) of Camden with its "Outstanding Contributor Award" for 2012 at a ceremony at Furman University. The award was presented by David Santiago (left), chairman of the chapter's outstanding contribution committee. Wertz retired in 2002 after a 30-year teaching career as a high school band director, the last 26 years at Camden High School. Carwash to benefit Camden family

Students at Camden High School have organized a car wash to take place Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Tractor Supply parking lot, behind Walmart. All proceeds from the car wash will go to buy clothes for the Alexander family, who recently lost their home and belongings in a house fire. Donations will be accepted at the car wash as well as Camden High School.

Let's make national park status happen

I recently attended the National League of Cities conference. This annual event, attended by representatives from thousands of cities, provides local leaders with resources, contacts and continuing education. The League is focused on helping cities build stronger communities. Advocacy, job creation, economic growth, effective policy making, and feasible collaboration are only a few of the topics we explored for continuing and creating sustainable, vibrant communities.

Retaining records

It's good to see that Gov. Nikki Haley, who hasn't won a reputation for openness in her administration, has agreed to a plan which will result in better retention of records in the governor's office. Haley and the S. C. Department of Archives and History agreed to the plan, which is partly a result of The State newspaper's discovery a few months ago that e-mails and other records were being routinely destroyed.

Lugoff-Elgin Middle School celebrates Pi Day

Eighth grade students at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School participated in Pi Day festivities by designing their own t-shirts. Students had to research and record onto t-shirts four interesting facts about Pi. Because of the nature of this year's Pi Day, the first ten digits of Pi had to be listed on the shirt along with the symbol for Pi.

Finally Friday kicks off Cup Weekend at Town Green

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) kicks off its 2015 Finally Friday Free Concert Series with a special edition on Friday on the Town Green with local band KT & Friends. The concert will be held from 6 – 8:30 p.m. This special Pre-Carolina Cup Kick Off is made possible by the City of Camden, along with sponsors NBSC, Powers Funeral Home, Alpine Agency, Warrior Fitness Camden, Graham Realty, City Laundry and Cleaners and TruVista. The Town Green is located at 1015 Market Street behind the Old Armory in downtown Camden.

The eighth annual Clinic Classic 5K walk/run, presented by McDonald's of Camden, and the Camden Family Care one-mile run/walk will take to the streets of Camden on Saturday, April 18.
