Many questions remain regarding YMCA proposal

I have been closely following the debate about creating a YMCA facility here in Camden. As much as I would like to be able to enjoy a year-round indoor pool, I cannot agree with our city leaders that this is the best use of my hospitality tax money. Casey Anthony

Many Kershaw County residents are no doubt keeping in their minds the most-used cliché in legal circles: you can never predict what a jury's going to do. It was a case that had captured public opinion perhaps as no other had since the murder trial of O.J. Simpson many years ago. Both defendants were acquitted despite circumstantial evidence that seemed overwhelming. Both cases also spotlighted Americans' fascination with the legal system and with high-profile crime cases.

Working class still backbone of America

I truly thank the brave workers of South Carolina who are fighting for economic justice and who voice their concern about this state's consistent disregard for the interest of the working class.

Obama's uncommon scold

An MSNBC commentator is in the doghouse over a mildly obscene on-air criticism of President Barack Obama. Fair enough. But, to me his language was less obscene than his suggestion that Obama was getting a too uppity with GOP budget negotiators.

Elgin OKs budget

The S.C. Treasury Department never gave Elgin Town Council a specific formula to predict the Local Option Sales Tax Revenue, so Mayor Brad Hanley performed the calculations and figured out the numbers on his own.

Light show extraordinaire

The light show over Lake Wateree Monday night in celebration of the Fourth of July treated spectators to colorful bursts both natural and manmade. Crackles of lightning intensified the annual fireworks display, hosted by the Lake Wateree Association (LWA) and Wateree Homeowners Association Fairfield County. Donations to this community event are still accepted by mail at LWA, P.O. Box 2132, Camden, SC 29021 or on the LWA's website.

A disturbing trend

We wrote recently of the disturbing trend in the White House of spinning every issue through press spokesmen rather than engaging in open questioning about issues of interest to Americans. A lack of transparency isn't limited to the federal government, as the S.C. Supreme Court has recently issued two troubling rulings which limit public access in the Palmetto State.
