2014 first quarter Chance Art presentation

Jo Griffith won the first Chance Art prize from Camden Art this year. Griffith was happy to receive her original work of art from Jane Hannon – a local professional artist from Camden. The original work of art was a wonderful example of contemporary art. Griffith said she was surprised to win but plans on collecting more of Hannon's work.

For years, I blamed it on those richly royal blue suede high heel pumps. The ones with the ridiculously tall, spiked heel and absurdly pointed toe. I was 22 when I bought them, 36 when I donated them to the Salvation Army.

• Congratulations to Camden High School (CHS) for becoming a 2014 Palmetto's Finest award winner Thursday. The jubilation in CHS' library was well-earned and an especially proud moment for Principal Dan Matthews. This is the second time Matthews has served as principal of a Kershaw County school earning the award, when he was at Lugoff-Elgin Middle School. Along with all-time high test scores, judges lauded CHS for donating more than $100,000 and 5,000 service hours to various charities during the past five years. In a match which was played in the rain, wind and sun while, all the while, being cold, the Lugoff-Elgin golf team avenged its lone loss of the season by defeating Sumter, 154-165, at Camden Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.

Benefit Co-ed volleyball tourney slated for NCHS

North Central High School will host a 3-on-3 co-ed volleyball tournament on Saturday, March 1 to held raise funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, a charitable foundation aimed at conquering various forms of childhood cancers, as well as for the NCHS Shield yearbook.

Frosts and Freezes not over, oh my!

To say these past few months have been cold is an understatement and while my northern roots have relished getting my wool sweaters out of the cedar chest, our trees and other plants have not had the ability to bundle up for warmth. No matter how you slice it, our woody friends have been exposed to dramatically cold temperatures this winter and even though spring is officially here, we have yet to see how Mother Nature's wintery touch has affected (or may still affect) all things green.

Patriot’s Day at BDK

Mrs. Robin Sowell's fourth grade class at Baron deKalb Elementary School recently recognized Patriot's Day. Patriot's Day is part of the "Why America is Free" curriculum. During this event, students were immersed in the Revolutionary Era and rotated in groups through different stations that included the language of the fan, militia training, the taking of the tea, quill and ink writing, historic games and a Colonial dance.
