Camden native pens book that asks: coincidence or divine creation?

Kathryn Hewitt became pregnant at 15. Her mother was determined that she wouldn't become a statistic, so Hewitt continued her education and went on to college while raising her son. It was extremely challenging, the Camden native recalls, and on more than one occasion she thought she couldn't do it … but she did.

• Ernest Borgnine, who died recently at the age of 95, was one of the great actors of Hollywood. Borgnine could adapt to almost any role, and unlike some celebrities in show business, he was a really good guy to boot. He was a true screen icon, and he will be missed.

The latest research indicates that tourists are traveling to historic and unique environmental destinations by the thousands. For example, millions of people visit Williamsburg, Va., annually. Congaree National Park attracts a multitude of visitors each year. However, according to the latest records, only 20,000 people visited Historic Camden this past year.

Trees get thirsty, too

Summer is officially here and we now have the temperatures to prove it! Along with high temperatures come afternoon showers and sometimes downright gully-washer rains. These rain events can be quite dramatic and appear like many inches have fallen from the sky. Unfortunately, most times this is not the case. Even in the rare occasions when we do actually get close to 1 inch of rain, it falls so hard and fast that the ground has little time to absorb it.

Boan promotoed to lieutenant colonel

Maj. (P) Jimmy W. Boan, son of Wayne and Ann Boan of Bethune, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel within the Georgia Army National Guard. A promotion ceremony took place May 24 at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, Ga.
