Aiming to get county tax notices out by October, Kershaw County Council unanimously approved first reading in title only of an ordinance setting the county's millage rate during its meeting Tuesday. County Administrator Vic Carpenter explained that approving the ordinance on first reading in title only allows council to flesh out the actual "body" of the ordinance before council's meeting Sept. 11.

The unexpired term of late Kershaw County Board of Schools Trustees member Joey Dorton will be filled via a special election, likely to be held in late September or early October. Kershaw County Voter Registration Asst. Director James Fitzpatrick said he had concluded that the special election would be held at that time. However, he said the plan still needs to be approved by Kershaw County's legislative delegation and the Kershaw County Board of Elections.
