County council tables cell tower amendment

Kershaw County Council Chairman Gene Wise decided to table a proposed amendment to an ordinance governing, among other things, the "fall zone" for, or distance between, cell towers. A public hearing on the matter drew nine speakers as council prepared to take up third and final reading of the amendment. Had the amendment been passed, it would have changed the distance between cell towers from 5,000 feet to 1,500 feet.

In-flight lessons

Getting sick is the worst! I know most people will agree with me, no matter who you are. I'm not sick right now. At least, I'm not allowing myself to believe I'm sick. Yes, I'm coughing and sniffling, but I'm telling myself it's allergies. Positive thinking or denial, not sure which it is, but hopefully it will keep me from getting full-blown go-to-the-doctor kind of sick.

Golden Club of Kershaw County inducts first female members

The Golden Club of Kershaw County recently inducted its first two female members, Kitty Baxley and Anne Porath, at its Thursday meeting. The Golden Club was originally chartered as a chapter of Kiwanis International, called Golden K. After concluding that the overhead for Kiwanis International was too high, the Golden Club decided to make more effective uses of their resources by forming an independent club. It is now chartered as a non-profit organization by the state of South Carolina.

Public hearing on cell tower amendment Tuesday

Kershaw County Council will take up third and final reading of an ordinance amending the county's code of zoning and land development regulations concerning communication towers, antennas and the definition of a "fall zone." At its Sept. 10 meeting, council voted unanimously to pass second reading with a reminder from County Attorney Ken DuBose that Tuesday's meeting would would include a public hearing before the ordinance could go through third reading.

Constitution Week celebrated in Camden

This week is Constitution Week in Camden. At its Sept. 10 meeting, Camden City Council presented a proclamation to Shirley Ransom of the Hobkirk Hill chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Local author selects winner of essay contest

The birth of her first granddaughter Delilah inspired Sandra Thomas, originally of Elgin, to write her first children's book Grandma's Here. Thomas said, "I was sitting at home recuperating from a knee surgery so I was able to spend more time with her and seeing her grow and get into stuff filled my heart."

September 11 remembered with countywide‘Day of Caring’

From Bethune to Blaney, the United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) kicked off its 2013 county-wide campaign Wednesday. The event saw various agencies, organizations, schools and individuals throughout the county contributing various acts of charity.

Lending a helping hand

Kim McCathern and State Rep. Laurie Slade Funderburk of Books on Broad helped out with United Way of Kershaw County's (UWKC) Day of Caring on September 11. McCathern and Funderburk cleaned and brought in new books and toys for the family visitation room at the Department of Social Services office. Funderburk said Books on Broad wanted to help provide a welcoming place "for when children who have been placed in the system are visiting with their families." The Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County (CMCKC) will host its annual Autumn Attic Sale in Springdale Plaza between Belk's and Goodwill, beginning with a preview party September 26 from 6-7:30 p.m. The cost is $20 at the door and all who attend receive priority shopping opportunities and champagne.

Boland, Outen, Tidwell new KershawHealth trustees

Tuesday night, Kershaw County Council appointed Wayne Tidwell of Buffalo Township, and Eric Boland and Susan Outen of DeKalb Township to the KershawHealth Board of Trustees. The trio fill the seats of outgoing trustees Scott Ziemke, George Corbin and Donald Witham.

KershawHealth loses $1.2 million in July

KershawHealth suffered an operating loss of $1.2 million and a $1.25 million decrease in net assets in July. KershawHealth Executive Vice President and COO/CFO Mike Bunch reported the losses during a finance-focus meeting of the KershawHealth Board of Trustees Tuesday evening.
