The first day of school after summer break brings mixed emotions for students and teachers. But what about the administrators and office personnel that work behind the scenes getting so many aspects of the school ready for the upcoming year? Some of these personnel shared their insight on what they do to prepare for the school year, how they felt on the first day, and some memories from memorable first days from the past and present.

Camden, Lugoff officials ‘squeeze’ for a charitable cause on Tuesday

Tuesday was National Lemonade Day and Chick - Fil-A celebrated by hosting a "squeeze off" between the Camden Police and Fire Departments versus a team made up of the Lugoff Fire Department and the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office to see who could squeeze the most lemons to make the most lemonade in a certain amount of time. Camden won, and as winners, they were allowed to donate the lemonade to the charity of their choice. They chose to give 30 gallons to Food for the Soul and 10 gallons to the Council on Aging.

‘Chance Art’ winner named for August

Mary Duren of Camden was selected as August's Chance Art! winner. She won a piece called Palmetto created by Dot Goodwin. Chance Art! is a program sponsored by The Artist's Attic. A piece of art created by a local art is given away to a lucky community member. For a chance to win, simply fill out the coupon and bring it by The Artist's Attic located at 930 Broad St., in Camden. The Artist's Attic features eight different artists with their various works on display for purchase.

Johnson’s inspirational journey of ‘loss’

Camden native Brandie Johnson can be described as a hard worker in many respects. She graduated from Camden High School in 1999 and then four years later graduated from Columbia College with a B.S. in Business Administration. She has raised a daughter, Madaline, who is now 15. She also manages the office at McCoy Nursing Home in Bishopville.

Economic Development 101

Peggy McLean and Lauren Reeder's job descriptions are unique. Unique to the point that McLean often offers what she calls Economic Development 101 to people when they ask, "What do you do?" McLean works as the director of the Kershaw County Economic Development Office. Reeder is the marketing and administrative assistant.

Open house and hot dog lunch

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) invites all community members to the 2013 Arts Open House & Hot Dog Lunch on Saturday, August 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the FAC grounds. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. Attendees may take part in a community art project; tours of the FAC; pottery, dance and music demonstrations; and face-painting.

Louise Mickle Harvey scholarship awarded to Savannah Long

Bethesda Presbyterian Church recently awarded the Louise Mickle Harvey Scholarship fund to Savannah Long. Long is currently a second year medical student and University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She intends to pursue primary care residency and to return to Camden after her training concludes. The scholarship, which was established by the late Tom Mickle in 1995 in memory of his wife who had the desire to be a doctor, is awarded to a deserving female medical student from this area. During the past 17 years, an excess of $117,000 in scholarships have been awarded to 12 different ...

Joseph, Piasecki elected SCOA president, secretary/treasurer

For the first time, a local orthopaedic surgeon is president of the S.C. Orthopaedic Association (SCOA). On top of that, one of his partners is also SCOA's new secretary/treasurer.
