Erica Broughton to be remembered at benefit

To say that Erica Marshall Broughton will be missed by those who knew her is an understatement. According to her family, she was beloved by her friends, family and community members. Broughton, a postal employee, volunteer firefighter and youth leader, died following a single vehicle accident in November near Bethune at the age of 26.

Anne Frank exhibit’s opening night draws large attendance

A large turnout of students, parents, faculty staff and community members marked a successful opening Thursday night at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) of an international traveling exhibit focused on Anne Frank, whose diary chronicled her family's attempts to hide from Nazis during World War II.

CHS finalist for Palmetto’s Finest Schools Award

Camden High School (CHS) is a finalist for the 2014 Palmetto's Finest Schools Awards. After extensive evaluations by fellow educators and previous Palmetto's Finest winners, CHS is among nine schools competing for the honor. The application process includes elements on student achievement, instructional programs, professional learning communities and school culture.

An unexpected visitor

An unexpected visitor recently took up residence in Cassatt. A female Selasphorus rufus or Rufous Hummingbird showed up at naturalist Josh Arrants and his wife, Aimee's, home.

Local churches combine efforts for W.A.R.M.

Several local churches recently combined their efforts to achieve a project known as W.A.R.M. (Weatherization And Repair Ministry). The initiative was begun in 1989 by Richard and Sara Hagins of Camden. The Hagins were and still are members of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church, and they along with other church members began repairing homes in the community, especially those damaged by Hurricane Hugo.

Students to take leadership role with Anne Frank exhibit

Students at Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) will take on leadership roles when an international exhibit on World War II diarist Anne Frank opens at the school Jan. 9. According to former L-EHS student Coy Gibson, who helped have his alma mater selected as an exhibition site, current students will play an important role during the exhibit's appearance.

Miss Camden, Miss Camden Teen pageant Saturday

The 2014 Miss Camden and Miss Camden Teen Pageant will be held Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Camden High School Performing Arts Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased from contestants for $10 or at the door the night of the event, if still available, for $15. There are approximately 100 tickets still available.

ATEC teacher celebrates national award

Earlier this year, Katie Gilson learned she was one of 41 recipients of the National Association of Agricultural Educators' (NAAE) Teachers Turn the Key (TTTK) Award. With the award came the chance for Gilson -- selected from a nationwide pool of applicants -- to travel to Las Vegas to attend the NAAE's annual convention.

These pets need a home

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Carver, a female Beagle mix and a female cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. A consumer advocacy website, NerdWallet.com, recently posted an article naming Kershaw County the No. 3 county in the state for job seekers. NerdWallet.com describes itself as seeking to help consumers locate "where the jobs will be."

The Easter egg hunt mentality

Easter. Go ahead and let the word resonate in your mind. Let all the memories and fond associations come rushing over you. Easter is such a lovely holiday.
