Horses accused of vandalizing swimming pool

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies responded to Shadow Mist Lane in Elgin on Saturday after a resident said horses had damaged her swimming pool. The KCSO report said the woman first called authorities around 1:40 a.m. and said her neighbor's horses were in her yard. She called again around 10:30 a.m. and said she and her daughter had gone outside to use the pool and found it was collapsed and the water had run out onto the ground. Camden Fire Department Explorers excel at state competition

Explorer Post 911 is a group of 14 to 18-year olds with an interest in firefighting. Six members of the group went to the annual Explorer competition at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Thursday, June 12. Advisor Abram Johnson of the Camden Fire Department (CFD) said the team made him proud as individuals and as a team.

Thomley sues Matthews for $2 million

David Thomley lost his bid to be Kershaw County Sheriff in Tuesday's Republican primary and two days later filed a $2 million lawsuit against Sheriff Jim Matthews. Thomley is a former captain with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office and the suit alleges Matthews made disparaging comments about Thomley's investigation of a reported case of "fighting and bullying" involving several students at Camden Military Academy (CMA).

Bethune residents urged to fight school referendum

Bethune residents upset about the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees recent vote to consolidate three elementary schools, including Bethune Elementary School (BES), into one larger school discussed the matter at the Bethune Town Council meeting Thursday. The consolidation plan involves BES, Mt. Pisgah and Baron DeKalb Elementary Schools, which would be combined into a single, new school to be built near North Central High School and North Central Middle School.

County council set to finalize budget

A public hearing and a third and final vote on the Kershaw County budget for fiscal year 2015 is on the agenda for Tuesday's meeting of the county council. The meeting normally would have been June 10, but was postponed a week by the primary election.

Voters head to the polls Tuesday for primary election

As of 2 p.m. Tuesday, election officials reported that voter turnout for primary voting had already surpassed the 2012 primary. Kershaw County Voter Registration Director Rosalind Watson said there was a light turnout overall, but that some precincts had reported more than expected voters.

Seven Republican primary candidates answered questions and presented their views during a June 3 forum at Lugoff-Elgin High School. The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Kershaw County Teacher Forum sponsored the event. The candidates are competing in Tuesday's primary for county sheriff , council chairman and treasurer.

Man pleads guilty to sexually abusing girl

A circuit court judge sentenced a Lexington County man to 20 years in prison Tuesday after the man pleaded guilty in Kershaw County to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14.

Rights and responsibilities

This election year is certainly shaping up to be an interesting one in Kershaw County, including, and in some cases especially, next week in the primary. Several races will be determined on Tuesday, as all the candidates for those particular offices represent the same political party. Whoever wins Tuesday will have no competition in the November general election, so they'll already know what they'll be doing the next few years. Well, let's hope they'll know what they're doing.

Solicitor visits Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee meeting

Discussion was passionate at Thursday's meeting of the Kershaw County Firearms Discharge Advisory Committee, with audience comments coming from both sides of the issue. The committee was formed after county council proposed an ordinance restricting the use of firearms in unincorporated areas, but it was dropped after passing first reading. County ordinances require three separate approval votes to become law. The ordinance was abandoned after outcry from gun enthusiasts who said it was too restrictive and violated their rights.

Lugoff Fire-Rescue saves woman and child from rising waters

Heavy rains Friday morning caused traffic problems in western Kershaw County. Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) crews were dispatched around 6 a.m. Friday to Training Track Drive inside the Saddlebrook Subdivision off U.S. 1 in Lugoff for a vehicle partially submerged in water with passengers trapped inside.

It sure has felt good to have some cooler days lately. After a long, hot summer, it's nice to know the more pleasant breeze of a pre-autumn day. I have heard many people say similar things in the past week or two, and then there's usually also a follow-up comment about how it won't be long until we're complaining about how cold it is or there's snow and ice on the roads. All true.

U.S. Navy allowed WWII vet to see the world

With his 90th birthday barely a month away, Benny Martin looks back over the decades on a life that has taken him around the United States and the world. Martin was born Oct. 28, 1924 in Buhl, Idaho. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served three years during World War II starting in 1943.

Body recovered from Wateree River

After a search spanning nearly 40 hours, crews from local and state agencies found the body of a missing Sumter man on Monday morning in the Wateree River approximately one-half mile from where he disappeared. Authorities said Michael Adell Kolb, 47, disappeared around 5 p.m. Saturday from Patriot's Landing, the boat ramp and dock below the U.S. 1 bridge crossing the river and connecting Camden with Lugoff.
