EMS deal moves forward with county ordinances

Although Kershaw County Council passed a resolution two weeks ago accepting a $2.6 million deal to take over emergency medical services (EMS) from KershawHealth, it will take up two ordinances related to officially making that deal at its meeting Tuesday night.

Training seminar for prospective umpires Sunday

Sports lovers looking for a part-time endeavor which can net them a few dollars this spring and summer are invited to learn baseball and softball officiating at special training seminars coming up soon. Kershaw County Parks and Recreation Department Athletic Director Shane Duncan said the first opportunity -- a Dixie Youth Umpire Certification session -- is this Sunday. It will be in the Old Armory gymnasium on DeKalb Street from 2 to 6 p.m. The fee is $20 for the training and $5 for a uniform patch.

‘Read Across America’ volunteers sought

Reading to children can make a difference in their lives and hopefully instill a love for reading in them at a young age. The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce and Kershaw County School District (KCSD) are partnering Feb. 27 for the annual "Read Across America" event. The chamber and district are seeking volunteers to visit Kershaw County's 11 elementary schools that morning to read Dr. Seuss books to students.

Camden man struck and killed by two vehicles

A Camden man died Thursday night after being struck by two vehicles on S.C. 34. The S.C. Highway Patrol reported Albert Linton Humphries, 51, was walking south, crossing S.C. 34 approximately 2 miles south of Camden when he was struck by a car driven by a 69-year-old man traveling westbound. The impact knocked Humphries across the highway into the eastbound lane where he was struck by another car, driven by a 45-year-old man.

The Camden Police Department (CPD) recognized its best sworn officers at its 17th annual Awards Night and Banquet on Feb. 10.

Bethune welcomes new town council member

Bethune Town Council is officially back up to a full roster of five with Thursday's swearing in of Cynthia Hunter, who was voted into office in a special election Jan. 27. Hunter will serve the remainder of the term left by the resignation of Joe Casey, which runs through the end of this year.

There certainly is plenty of it, especially with so many news outlets on the internet and cable and satellite TV. KCC approves KCSD budget

Smiles and handshakes filled the Kershaw County Council chamber Tuesday night after council approved the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) budget by a 5-2 vote. Kershaw County Administrator Vic Carpenter said the KCSD requested a budget increase of $397,000, to be used for pay increases for teachers and other staff.

A man robbed the Sandhills Bank in Bethune Tuesday morning. Bethune Police Chief Joey Cobb, Kershaw County Sheriff's Office investigators and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation processed the scene Tuesday and sorted out evidence.

Phillips: The lost art of playing

I do have to admit having a love/hate relationship with technology. It's something we all rely on, more and more each day, it seems, but I don't have to look very far to find some negatives about it, too. The biggest is how reliant we have become on it, usually without even realizing it.
