Heflin sworn in as Bethune councilman again

The town of Bethune welcomed a new councilman to the local government Thursday night, but he's a familiar face. John Heflin served on council previously for eight years and was sworn in by Judge Cody Mitchell at a special council meeting Thursday. Heflin fills the council vacancy left by former Councilwoman Beverly Farmer's resignation in March.

LF-R requests funding for new fire marshal

With Lugoff being one of the fastest growing areas of Kershaw County, Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) wants to be sure they keep up with that growth in its firefighting and prevention services. LF-R Chief Dennis Ray presented information to Kershaw County Council at its meeting Tuesday, asking for approval of the LF-R's Fiscal Year 2015 budget. The proposal includes a 2-mil tax increase to fund the hiring of one additional firefighter who would also serve as the Lugoff Fire District's (LFD) fire marshal. The current millage rate for the district is 29.4.

Camden honors fallen vets at Cedar Cemetery

For the sixth consecutive year, Camden citizens held a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday at Cedars Cemetery on South Campbell Street. The 9:30 a.m. event began with a welcome by organizer Linda Sutton-Dutton.

Interstate 20 crash ties up traffic on Sunday

A three-vehicle crash left I-20 blocked for several hours near the Kershaw/Richland County line Sunday. Lugoff Fire-Rescue Chief Dennis Ray said a Ford Mustang and Dodge pickup truck were traveling westbound on I-20 when they collided. The S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) said the Mustang drove partially off the left side of the road, over-corrected and struck the pickup, causing that driver to lose control, rolling the truck several times. The Mustang then drove underneath an already disabled tractor-trailer truck stopped on the shoulder.

LF-R to present budget to county council

Lugoff Fire-Rescue Chief Dennis Ray will present a detailed slide show during Kershaw County Council's meeting Tuesday on how the Lugoff Fire District has grown. Ray will also ask council to approve his department's budget for the next fiscal year.

‘Monkeys taste like chocolate’

People cope with the loss of a loved one in different ways. A Lugoff woman whose 10-year-old daughter died suddenly in October 2011 following an asthma attack channeled her grief into writing a book. Melissa Stover said she always had an interest in writing, but the passing of her daughter, Carissa, inspired her to pen the children's book, "Monkeys Taste Like Chocolate."

A day to remember

One of my responsibilities at the newspaper is to go out each week and do the "Sidewalk Survey" feature we run each Wednesday. Just in case you're not aware of it, let me explain. I find six random people around town and ask them one opinion question. There are no right or wrong answers; it really is their opinion. If they're willing to answer, I get their name and town of residence and take their photo. That's where I lose some of them. A lot of people are willing to answer a question, but some balk when ...

Chamber honors Prestages at annual awards banquet

The Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce presented its President's Award to Drs. Ron and Cindy Prestage, capping off its 104th Annual Awards Gala at the Robert Mills Courthouse on Friday. The Prestages are owners of Prestage Farms, which operates in seven states with 1,900 employees, including 170 in South Carolina.

It sure has felt good to have some cooler days lately. After a long, hot summer, it's nice to know the more pleasant breeze of a pre-autumn day. I have heard many people say similar things in the past week or two, and then there's usually also a follow-up comment about how it won't be long until we're complaining about how cold it is or there's snow and ice on the roads. U.S. Navy allowed WWII vet to see the world

With his 90th birthday barely a month away, Benny Martin looks back over the decades on a life that has taken him around the United States and the world. Martin was born Oct. 28, 1924 in Buhl, Idaho. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served three years during World War II starting in 1943.

Body recovered from Wateree River

After a search spanning nearly 40 hours, crews from local and state agencies found the body of a missing Sumter man on Monday morning in the Wateree River approximately one-half mile from where he disappeared. Authorities said Michael Adell Kolb, 47, disappeared around 5 p.m. Saturday from Patriot's Landing, the boat ramp and dock below the U.S. 1 bridge crossing the river and connecting Camden with Lugoff.
