Bethune hires police chief

The town of Bethune has hired a new police chief after being without one since the resignation of Officer Glenn Davis in April. Mayor Charles McCoy reported at that time that Davis had submitted a resignation letter Thursday, April 10 saying the following day would be his last as a town employee.

Firearms ordinance temporarily shelved

An ordinance restricting the use of firearms in Kershaw County has been dropped from Tuesday's Kershaw County Council agenda.

Camden Garden Club helps beautify downtown

The Camden Garden Club recently partnered with the city of Camden on a project to provide more colorful flowers in the downtown area. Catherine French, the club's past president, said the city provided the 16 containers for the plants and pledged to keep them watered, while the garden club furnished the plants, dirt and effort to install the plants along Broad Street.

County forms corporation to manage $8.5 million bond

Kershaw County Council recently formed a public facilities corporation to oversee the spending of up to $8.5 million from bonds council approved in June. The money is designated for capital improvements, including renovations to the Kershaw County Detention Center, upgrades at Central Carolina Technical College and improvements for county recreation facilities.

Fire chiefs urge caution with fireworks

July 4 is celebrated in many ways, with cookouts, patriotic concerts and parades. But one fun thing about the holiday that carries the potential for danger is fireworks. Kershaw County fire chiefs want everyone to have fun on the 4th, but to also use caution and common sense when dealing with fireworks.

KCSO Lt. graduates FBI academy

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Lt. Steve Knafelc graduated from the 255th Session of the FBI (FBI) National Academy on June 13. In a ceremony held at the FBI academy in Quantico, Va., Knafelc graduated along with law enforcement officials from the District of Columbia, 17 countries, six military organizations and five federal civilian organizations.

LF-R recognizes Lugoff resident

Members of Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) members and the Lugoff Fire District Board of Commissioners recognized Lugoff citizen Sidney Butler at the board's monthly meeting June 23. Chief Dennis Ray said Butler was recognized and presented a plaque for his service to the Lugoff community and the fire department by providing support and input for community and county growth projects.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies stopped an elderly man in Lee County after a low-speed chase on I-20 following an alert for a reckless driver without headlights on I-20 in Kershaw County.

Hewitt is first KCSO drug recognition expert deputy

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) Deputy Kyle Hewitt recently received Drug Recognition Expert certification (DRE) following completion of a training, evaluation and testing program. Hewitt is the first law enforcement officer from the KCSO to receive this certification.

Camden jewel thief arrested in Charlotte

The Camden Police Department (CPD) charged an Indiana man who recently relocated to Charlotte, N.C., for allegedly stealing three rings from two Camden jewelry stores this month. CPD Chief Joe Floyd identified the man as Justin Charles Tarpley, 32, whose official address is in Porter, Ind. Floyd said diligent investigation by Det. Dallas Rabon resulted in Tarpley's capture.

Burns wins Republican nomination for KCC chair

Retired U.S. Army General Julian Burns will represent the Republican party for Kershaw County Council Chairman in the November 4 general election after winning a runoff Tuesday against Ben Connell. Burns, Connell and Gene Hartis ran on the Republican ballot in the June 10 primary. Burns received the most votes, but less than 50 percent, so a runoff was required with Hartis, who received the second highest number of votes. Hartis, however, decided to withdraw from the race, which allowed Connell to face Burns in the runoff.

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a county man Monday on a charge of second-degree burglary after he allegedly made his way inside a Kershaw area home and hid when a woman and her two children arrived after school.

Murder trial starts Monday

Almost exactly a year after a Bethune senior citizen lost his life over his moped, his accused killer is set to go to trial. Willie Thomas Starnes, 33, of Magnum Road Bethune, is charged with the Aug. 24, 2013, death of Alan Thomas Robinson, 67, also of Bethune. The trial is scheduled to begin Monday at the Kershaw County Courthouse.

LF-R, others remember Chief Steve McIntyre

Kershaw County residents, especially those in the fire service, are mourning the loss of retired Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) Chief Steve McIntyre, 60, who passed away Sunday, Aug. 10. Current LF-R Chief Dennis Ray said McIntyre had encountered continuing medical issues over the past few years.

Bethune police chief gets pay raise

Newly-hired Bethune Police Chief Joey Cobb received some good news at Bethune Town Council's meeting Thursday. After a brief executive session discussion near the end of the meeting, council unanimously voted to give Cobb a $500 a year pay raise and provide him with a cell phone paid for by the town. The raise brings the part-time chief's annual pay to $16,000.
