Bethune council approves annual budget

The Bethune Town Council passed the town's budget for fiscal year 2015-2016 during a 6:30 p.m. special meeting Thursday before the regular 7 p.m. monthly meeting. Vice-mayor Don Witham presided over both meetings, as Mayor Charles McCoy was away on business.

Lugoff man arrested for sexual conduct with teen

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) investigators arrested Donnie Lee Hudson, 32, of Lugoff, on two counts of criminal sexual conduct on a minor under 14 years of age. According to a KCSO press release, investigators first arrested Hudson on May 13.

Law enforcement leaders address public

Local and state law enforcement chiefs met with the public Thursday evening in a program hosted by the Concerned Clergy of Kershaw County. Panelists in Camden High School's auditorium included Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews, Camden Police Department (CPD) Chief Joe Floyd and S.C. Highway Patrol (SCHP) Deputy Commander Lt. Col. Chris Williamson. Elgin Police Chief Harold Brown and Bethune Police Chief Joey Cobb also attended. Rev. Dr. Augustus Rodgers, pastor of Unity United Methodist Church in Lugoff served as the master of ceremonies.

Suominen announces expansion in Bethune

Suominen, a Helskinki, Finland, global manufacturer, announced plans Tuesday to expand its Bethune facility in Kershaw County, creating at least 25 new jobs. Suominen is the world's leading supplier of nonwoven textiles, such as baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, swabs and similar products used primarily for cleaning.
