Elgin man arrested for murder of adult son

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) arrested an Elgin man Thursday, charging him with murder in the shooting death of his son. According to a KCSO press release, Stephen Earl Wood Sr., 68, of Thorton Drive, Elgin, is accused of shooting and killing Stephen Earl Wood Jr., 26, who also lived at the home with his wife and two children.

Miller to spend life in prison for murdering Melton

Nickolas Jermaine Miller, 26, was supposed to face a jury in February 2016 for abducting Hope Roscoe Melton, 30, of Chesterfield County, on Dec. 26, 2011, and bringing her to Kershaw County where he raped and killed her by beating her with a baseball bat. He was supposed to face the death penalty.

Camden woman was first Texas A&M female cadet company commander

When Ruth Ann Schumacher, now Ruth Ann Burns of Camden, first joined the corps of cadets at Texas A&M University in 1974, she knew she had a challenge ahead of her. She was in the first group of female cadets at the prestigious university and was among 50 female classmates in the groundbreaking event.

Georgia fugitive arrested with large quantity of drugs

Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) deputies arrested a Delaware man wanted in Georgia, and the man's female companion Sunday. According to a KCSO press release, deputies arrested Charlie McLaughlin III, 31, and Kelly Molina, 30, both of Wilmington, Del., after he stopped them for speeding on I-20.

Camden man arrested for attempted murder, more

A Camden man is behind bars, charged with two counts of attempted murder, three counts of pointing and presenting a firearm and one count of breach of trust. Timmy Deandre Bennett, 21, of Knights Hill Road, Camden, turned himself in to the Camden Police Department (CPD) on Wednesday.

Phillips: For the love of animals

One of my weekly duties here at the Chronicle-Independent is to visit the Walter M. Crower Animal Shelter in Camden and take photos of pets available for adoption to be printed in our Friday edition each week. Actually, I take photos of two cats and two dogs and half of those are published weekly in the West Wateree Chronicle.

Four businesses cited for underage alcohol sales

Four Kershaw County retailers received citations for selling alcohol to underage buyers Tuesday evening. According to a press release, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) conducted undercover operations in which underage individuals supervised by the KCSO attempted to purchase alcoholic beverages from 46 locations where alcohol can be lawfully sold.

County council proceeds with EMS takeover

Kershaw County Council took its first steps Tuesday to formally accept a proposal for the county to take over emergency management services (EMS) from KershawHealth, effective July 1. Council voted 5-1 on Feb. 10 to accept an offer from KershawHealth of $2.636 million in exchange for the county giving up the property where KershawHealth sits. Councilman Sammie Tucker Jr. cast the only no vote, saying he felt transferring the property to KershawHealth would take away any "say so" the county has regarding the hospital. Councilman Willie Mickle was absent from that meeting.
