SS/HS grant a 'success' for KCSD

Programs funded by a grant obtained by Kershaw County following the 2007 gang-related shooting death of a high school student now employ 41 full- and part-time residents. It has helped reduce recidivism at the Kershaw County School District's (KCSD) Continuous Learning Center (CLC), provided "targeted" counseling to 2,900 students and created a positive behavioral program that will be expanded to all middle schools.

Near drowning averted at Kendall Lake

One day before an Elgin homeowner found 15-year-old Daven Williams dead in their swimming pool, a Camden man was transported -- alive -- to the hospital after nearly drowning in Kendall Lake. Camden Police Department (CPD) Chief Joe Floyd said the 35-year-old man had to be taken to the hospital after he tried to rescue his fiancé's flotation device.

McCaskill settles lawsuit against KCSO for $75,000

Kershaw County's insurance carrier will pay former Kershaw County Sheriff Steve McCaskill $75,000 to settle his defamation lawsuit against the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO). The lawsuit and four others were originally directed against current Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews as an individual over comments he made soon after taking office in 2011.
