A second arrest was made in the case of a fatal hit-and-run in Elgin on March 1. 26-year-old Jesus Corona Cabal, of Columbia, was charged with accessory after the fact for helping the driver involved in the hit and run "destroy" the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse that hit and killed Derk Lawrence Maricle of Lugoff, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly said.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews wants to pay his deputies more money in an effort to keep them on staff instead of losing them to other agencies. Matthews told Kershaw County Council members during a work session Thursday that the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) is becoming a training ground, and that the level of staff experience is decreasing as he loses valuable personnel.
Camden High School's (CHS) Palmetto Leaf newspaper staff won a total of eight awards from the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association (SCSPA) in April. For the first time since 1999, the Leaf won the Palmetto Award for its class level, Class 1, according to newspaper advisor Amy Goodwin. This is Goodwin's first year back at CHS; she is a CHS graduate and previously taught at the school. Goodwin has been a newspaper advisor for about 19 years.
A decision to hire a corporate staffing agency to provide substitute teachers in the Kershaw County School District (KCSD) will wait a little longer. The Kershaw County Board of School Trustees decided to put off a vote to hire Kelly Services at its meeting Tuesday night.
