Kershaw County charities to participate in Midlands Gives

Seven Kershaw County nonprofits will participate Tuesday in a 24-hour online giving campaign called Midlands Gives. The Central Carolina Community Foundation is using Midlands Gives to raise money and awareness for 150 area charities.

Mr. Lugoff-Elgin 2014

Saturday night, Lugoff-Elgin High School hosted its annual Mr. L-E contest. Eighteen students competed for the title. Winners were Mr. Congeniality, Austin Branham; 1st Runner Up, Dakota Jones; Mr. L-E 2014, Gunnar Branham; Jr. Mr. L-E 2014, Gunnar Catoe. Whitney Clendening was voted as Ms. Sweetheart.

My preperation for Easter

Easter is a holiday of two extremes. On one side is a covert celebration of springtime with cute bunnies and pretty dresses and Easter egg hunts and chicks and flowers and lambs. On the other is a lamb being slaughtered on Passover. There is a bloodstained cross on which a Jewish man is dying who proclaimed that he was the Son of God, and that he had to be killed so that God's wrath against my sins could be carried out not against me but against him.

KCSD superintendent honored at UWKC dinner

Moss retires after 40 years as dentist

In January, Dr. Cathy Moss, the first woman to graduate from the College of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), retired from a 40-year career in dentistry. Approximately 30 of those years were spent in Camden at what is now known as Drs. Moss & Owens dental practice, the practice of Dr. Moss and her late husband, Dr. William L. Owen III.

Tammy Bridges receives EPD Chief’s Award

Tammy Bridges, an employee at a daycare center, received the Elgin Police Department (EPD) Chief's Award during a special Wednesday night Elgin Town Council meeting. EPD Chief Harold Brown and council recognized Bridges for assisting two young boys during February's winter storm.

Blaney Elementary participates in Jump Rope for the Heart

Last Friday, Blaney Elementary School (BES) students learned about heart health and physical activity at Jump Rope for the Heart. Students rotated through 11 stations where they exercised, played games and learned about eating healthy. BES school nurse Kim Allen wanted to show students that exercise can be fun. Jump Rope for the Heart is a community service project that teaches students the importance of exercising and eating healthy. Through Jump Rope for the Heart, BES students exceeded their goal of $1000 in raising money for the American Heart Association.

Miss South Carolina 2012 to speak at FCA rally

Lugoff-Elgin High School's (L-EHS) Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host its second FCA rally Monday, March 3 in the L-EHS auditorium from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Miss South Carolina 2012 Ali Rogers and University of South Carolina Football Chaplain Adrian Despres will speak at the event. The praise band Fuse of Friendship Baptist will perform at the rally.

Single vehicle collision results in two deaths

A single vehicle collision on I-20 west bound at the 105 mile marker resulted in two fatalities early Saturday morning. Gladys Gholston, 71, was driving the 2005 Toyota with her husband Weldon Gholston, 86. The couple, from New York, was traveling west on I-20 and was in the process of relocating to South Carolina. The driver of the vehicle ran off of the highway and into the median where the car struck a tree and caught on fire. The accident is under investigation.

Miss Lugoff-Elgin 2015 crowned

29 young women competed for the titles of Miss L-E and Jr. Miss L-E Saturday evening at the Lugoff-Elgin High School auditorium. The theme for the evening was "Dancing into the 1920s." The following students were awarded titles for the Jr. Miss L-E division: Gracie Hill, Jr. Miss Congeniality; Ashlynn Russo, Jr. Miss Fan Favorite, 1st Runner Up (Jr. Miss L-E); McKenlee Davis, Jr. Miss Photogenic, 2nd Runner Up (Jr. Miss L-E); Ansley Puckett, Freshman Class Queen; Savannah Harvey, Sophomore Class Queen and Jr. Miss L-E 2015 Leah Hunter.
