Elgin council discusses possible change in FOIA fees

The town of Elgin may change the way it charges for S.C. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Elgin Town Council discussed updating FOIA processing fees during its Jan. 5 meeting. Councilwoman Dana Sloan reported on a possible change in state law which could affect what municipalities can charge for a FOIA request.

Elgin to host Community Friendship Fiesta

Next spring, the town of Elgin will host The ALPHA Center's annual Community Friendship Fiesta, a community picnic celebrating Hispanic culture and multiculturalism. The tentative date of the event will be Saturday, April 6 at Potter Community Park from 4 to 7 p.m.

KCSD unveils new mobile app

The Kershaw County School District (KCSD) unveiled a new mobile app at Tuesday night's meeting of the Kershaw County Board of School Trustees. The app, a free download, gives users quick and easy access to school and district information, news and notifications. It is available for use on Apple and Android products.

Boykin Christmas Parade

The annual Boykin Christmas parade will be held Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. The parade, known for its out of the ordinary and quirky floats, began 22 years ago. "I said, 'One of these years we should have a Christmas parade.' Bill Bundy said why not this year? This was at the Swift Creek Church at a community meeting," parade organizer Alice Boykin said. A Gospel Concert will follow the parade and will feature local church choirs from Broomhill, St. Stephen's and other churches.

Sistercare provides services for women in Kershaw County

South Carolina currently ranks first for incidents of domestic violence against women. Domestic violence victims often need legal and emotional support to get through an abusive relationship. Sistercare, a partner agency of the United Way of Kershaw County, is an organization which provides support for women and their children in Kershaw County who are in a situation of domestic violence.

Colonial Cup honors women of racing, promotes women’s health

Saturday marked the 46th year of the Marion DuPont Scott Colonial Cup. Cup attendees enjoyed crisp fall weather and infield activities such as the popular Terrier races, Military Salute and petting zoo. A new addition to this year's Colonial Cup was its designation as "Ladies Day at the Races." Chief Executive Officer of the Carolina Cup Racing Association Nick Ellis said this year's theme was to honor the contributions women have made specifically to the Colonial Cup. ETC amends Elgin Citizen of the Year procedures

On a 3-2 vote, Elgin Town Council voted to amend procedures for the town's Citizen of the Year award during its Nov. 3 meeting. The amended procedures now include making sitting council members ineligible to win the award. The revised procedure will go into effect this year.
