County, Elgin team up to keep waters clean

Clean water is something that can easily be taken for granted, however there are government programs in place to help enforce practices to ensure that the water supply stays clean and uncontaminated. The Kershaw County Stormwater Management program, however, aims to significantly reduce water pollutants that enter local streams, lakes and other bodies of water.

Birthday Books

Addison Guster and Wyatt Rabon of Lugoff recently celebrated their fifth birthdays. Instead of gifts, they asked that their guests bring new or gently used children books to donate to children in Kershaw County. The two friends collected approximately 200 books. "We're giving books to kids who don't have any," Wyatt explained. Addison's and Wyatt's mothers have been celebrating their children's birthdays by collecting books and other needed items for three years now. The books they recently donated at the Kershaw County Health Department will be given to children who visit with their parents.

Hundreds gather in Elgin for Gabbiee Swainson vigil

"Taken too soon" was the phrase repeated numerous times during a vigil Wednesday night to honor Gabbiee Swainson's life. Gabbiee, a student at Ridgeview High School in Richland County, was taken from her northeast Columbia home one year ago.

Elgin may only allow by-permit charity events

Individuals and organizations who want to hold charity events in the town of Elgin may have to apply for a permit to do so in the near future. Tuesday night, Elgin Town Council passed first reading of an ordinance that would establish such a rule. No fee would be charged to obtain the permit, however.

Where’s Waldo comes to Camden

Waldo made a visit to Camden this past Wednesday at Books on Broad. The Find Waldo party began at 3 p.m. and was a culmination of a month long passport scavenger hunt that took participants to 25 local businesses in a search for Waldo.

Silvers sworn in at Elgin Town Council

L-EWA to extend Rabon Road line

The Lugoff-Elgin Water Authority (L-EWA) Board of Directors voted unanimously to extend a water line on Rabon Road to include six more homes. The vote came after Rabon Road resident Brandy Husdon requested for the L-EWA to do so. During June's meeting, Hudson presented a jar of water from her residence to the L-EWA board. Hudson explained that the current well water supply had high levels of iron deposits that tinted it a dark yellow. Preserving history

A hard working group of Elgin community members is diligently working to establish Elgin's first museum. Members of the Blaney-Elgin Museum Committee have sold wreaths, hosted yard sales and even written a book to raise the money to fund the museum.
