January 31, 22 Lugoff-Elgin High School "Hollywood Hunks" competed for the title of Mr. L-E. Pictured (from left to right) are Mr. Hunk 2015, Javier Polo; Mr. Photogenic, Brandon Todd; Mr. L-E and recipient of the Austin Branham Mr. Congeniality award Tripp Cox; Ms. Sweetheart 2015, Savannah Harvey and Mr. L-E first runner up Da'San Ardis. Mr. Hunk was determined by audience members. The Austin Branham Mr. Congeniality award and Miss Sweetheart were determined by the contestants.

Grocery store chain fills CCM’s pantry

On Jan. 27, a truck pulled up to Christian Community Ministries (CCM) at the United Way's Holstein Building on DeKalb Street in Camden and unloaded enough food to stock CCM's pantry -- twice.

Miss Lugoff-Elgin 2015 crowned

29 young women competed for the titles of Miss L-E and Jr. Miss L-E Saturday evening at the Lugoff-Elgin High School auditorium. The theme for the evening was "Dancing into the 1920s." The following students were awarded titles for the Jr. Miss L-E division: Gracie Hill, Jr. Miss Congeniality; Ashlynn Russo, Jr. Miss Fan Favorite, 1st Runner Up (Jr. Miss L-E); McKenlee Davis, Jr. Miss Photogenic, 2nd Runner Up (Jr. Miss L-E); Ansley Puckett, Freshman Class Queen; Savannah Harvey, Sophomore Class Queen and Jr. Miss L-E 2015 Leah Hunter.

Candy Silvers announces reelection campaign

Elgin Councilwoman Candace "Candy" Silvers is running for reelection in Elgin's Feb. 3 election for town council. Voters put Silvers on council during a special election in 2013 to replace former Councilman Norman Allen "Bubba" Ernst after his resignation. Silvers previously served on Elgin's planning and zoning commission. She said she would like the opportunity to continue to help her community through public service.

Elgin’s Potter Park to host Cars 2 Dreams car show

Classic collectible hotrod cars and trucks will be on display when Elgin's Potter Community Parks hosts the sixth annual Cars 2 Dreams car show March 14. The show, featuring classic vehicles from various car clubs and individuals from throughout South Carolina, is sponsored by the Jamil Shrine Temple and O'Reilly Auto Parts. Proceeds will benefit the Shrine's Children Hospital of Greenville. The 2014 show raised approximately $3,000.

Hanley announces candidacy for Elgin town council seat

Elgin Mayor Brad Hanley, who recently announced he would not run for reelection as mayor, is now announcing he will run for a "regular" seat on Elgin Town Council in an election slated for Feb. 3. Hanley's current term ends in February. Hanley said he decided not to run for reelection for mayor due to increased responsibilities at his job.

Elgin council approves library porch enclosure

An outdoor porch on the side of the Kershaw County Library's (KCL) Elgin branch will be enclosed soon. Elgin Town Council voted to approve the construction during its first meeting of 2015 on Tuesday night.

L-EHS Drama Dept. showcases student work

Lugoff-Elgin High School (L-EHS) drama students recently portrayed the perils, joys and everyday challenges of high school life in their winter production. The play consisted of a series of monologues, written by L-EHS Drama III students, dealing with issues such as pregnancy, parent's divorce, social media mishaps, relationship issues and navigating friendships. The play followed a group of students through their senior year in high school.

Elgin Lights continue to spread holiday cheer

Light displays, hayrides, toy trains, tractors, a running steam engine and even a visit from Santa are just a fraction of what guests will experience if they visit Elgin Lights. For nearly 20 years, Paul Towns, his family and friends have hosted the free Christmas event.

WES gears up for robotics competition this weekend

Saturday, Wateree Elementary School's Lego Robotic Team will compete in the FIRST LEGO League (FFL) robotics competition. Since the beginning of the school year, the team built and programmed its "Terminator" robot.
