Elgin Town Council is continuing to move forward with plans to develop Potter Community Park and to construct a military flag tribute in Elgin.
During the colder months of the year, many Kershaw County residents take for granted having a warm house in which to stay. But for some, having their own residence is not a reality. The United Way of Kershaw County (UWKC) is hoping to change that.
Santa received some extra help from the town of Elgin providing Christmas cheer to local children, senior citizens and families. With the help of the community, Elgin Police Department's annual Toy Round Up and Caring Hands programs were able to give approximately 100 children, 20 senior citizens and 50 families help with gifts and meals.
Students, faculty and community members celebrated the season of giving Thursday at Lugoff-Elgin High School's (L-EHS) Holiday Hopes. L-EHS Principal Thomas Gladden reminded students that giving back to the community is an important part the school's focus.
Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Pippin, a two-year-old male Beagle mix and a white and gray Tabby Cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. This year marks the 16th year of Elgin Lights, a Christmas display featuring more than 35,000 lights put on for the community at the home of Paul and Sarah Towns.
This year marked the 38th year of Elgin's Catfish Stomp with residents braving both rain and cooler temperatures to attend the festivities.
Thursday night, Elgin celebreated the start of the holiday season with the lighting of the town's Christmas tree. Pastors Ken Jackson (Hillcrest Baptist Church) and Philip Blankenship (Blaney Baptist Church) were speakers for the evening.
Elgin Town Council discussed the town's upcoming December festivities including the Catfish Stomp which got underway Thursday night with the town's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Elgin Citizen of the Year Kathy Brown lit the Christmas tree.
Kathy Brown is the 2013 Elgin Citizen of the Year. The town named Brown its citizen of the year at its Christmas Dinner held the weekend of Nov. 23. Her closest friends and family managed to keep it from her until the moment it was announced at the dinner.
The Elgin community gathered at Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church in Elgin Wednesday to dedicatea section of I-20 to a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office deputy killed in the line of duty in 1974. Police officers, state and local representatives and more joined members of the late Deputy Chris Potter III's family to honor him.

Radiate Church is just a little more than two years old but is already making a positive difference in its community. The church, which meets at Killian Elementary in Richland County, recently wrapped up its Cover Columbia campaign where members exceeded a goal of 200 community service hours with a total of 464 hours. Some of those hours were spent at Elgin's branch of the Kershaw County Library and Grooms Garden in Kershaw County.
The town of Elgin will honor its Citizen of the Year at Elgin's Holiday dinner on Nov. 24, recognizing the winner's significant service to the community. A selection committee is currently accepting nominations for individuals who have contributed outstanding public service to the town of Elgin and/or the Elgin Community. Nomination forms for Elgin's Citizen of the Year can be picked up and submitted at Elgin Town Hall. The deadline is Monday.
