Lugoff-Elgin HS gets into the spirit of giving

Students, faculty and community members celebrated the season of giving Thursday at Lugoff-Elgin High School's (L-EHS) Holiday Hopes. L-EHS Principal Thomas Gladden reminded students that giving back to the community is an important part the school's focus.

Home for the Holidays

Among the animals available for adoption at the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter are Pippin, a two-year-old male Beagle mix and a white and gray Tabby Cat. The adoption donation includes spaying or neutering. The shelter, located at the south end of Fair Street and managed by the Kershaw County Humane Society, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Thursday night, Elgin celebreated the start of the holiday season with the lighting of the town's Christmas tree. Pastors Ken Jackson (Hillcrest Baptist Church) and Philip Blankenship (Blaney Baptist Church) were speakers for the evening.

Elgin hosts Catfish Stomp this weekend

Elgin Town Council discussed the town's upcoming December festivities including the Catfish Stomp which got underway Thursday night with the town's annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Elgin Citizen of the Year Kathy Brown lit the Christmas tree.

Kathy Brown named Elgin Citizen of the Year

Kathy Brown is the 2013 Elgin Citizen of the Year. The town named Brown its citizen of the year at its Christmas Dinner held the weekend of Nov. 23. Her closest friends and family managed to keep it from her until the moment it was announced at the dinner.

Section of I-20 dedicated to Elgin’s Chris Potter

The Elgin community gathered at Highway Pentecostal Holiness Church in Elgin Wednesday to dedicatea section of I-20 to a Kershaw County Sheriff's Office deputy killed in the line of duty in 1974. Police officers, state and local representatives and more joined members of the late Deputy Chris Potter III's family to honor him.

Radiate Church reaches out to Elgin

Radiate Church is just a little more than two years old but is already making a positive difference in its community. The church, which meets at Killian Elementary in Richland County, recently wrapped up its Cover Columbia campaign where members exceeded a goal of 200 community service hours with a total of 464 hours. Some of those hours were spent at Elgin's branch of the Kershaw County Library and Grooms Garden in Kershaw County.

Elgin accepting Citizen of the Year nominations

The town of Elgin will honor its Citizen of the Year at Elgin's Holiday dinner on Nov. 24, recognizing the winner's significant service to the community. A selection committee is currently accepting nominations for individuals who have contributed outstanding public service to the town of Elgin and/or the Elgin Community. Nomination forms for Elgin's Citizen of the Year can be picked up and submitted at Elgin Town Hall. The deadline is Monday. Nomination forms can also be mailed to Citizen of the Year c/o The Town of Elgin, P.O. Box 277, Elgin, SC 29045.

Elgin Museum selling wreaths for veterans’ graves

The Blaney-Elgin Museum and Historical Society is currently selling wreaths with Wreaths Across America to place on the graves of veterans at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. A single wreath costs $15 with $5 going to the Blaney-Elgin Museum.
