More than 125 community members, government officials and students participated in the annual Day of Caring, sponsored locally by the United Way of Kershaw County. The Day of Caring is always held Sept. 11 to commemorate the day by volunteering in schools, libraries and nonprofit organizations throughout Kershaw County.

Forty-six foster and shelter dogs got a second chance at finding a forever home Friday afternoon thanks to a collaboration of the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF) of the Hamptons, N.Y.; Fostering Foster Animal Rescue (FFAR) of Camden and Kershaw County's Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter.

South Carolina has one of the highest incidents of domestic violence-related homicide in 2014. According to the latest South Carolina Report on Domestic Violence, Homicide Victims, 83 percent of reported incidents in the state were committed against women. Sistercare -- a private, nonprofit United Way partner agency serving Kershaw, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry and Richland counties -- helps battered women and their children. Executive Director Nancy Barton said Sistercare's purpose is to provide various services for women and their children who are survivors of domestic violence.

Eighteen boys and girls from Uganda will perform in concert at Camden's Bethel Worship Center on Sept. 20. The children are members of the African Children's choir which has performed for a variety of audiences from heads of state to local church congregations.

This fall, non-profit organization Lighthouse for Life will host its first fundraiser in Lugoff. The event is set for Oct. 11 at Lugoff Ford from 1 to 5 p.m. Lighthouse for Life is based in Columbia and works to combat sex trafficking in the state through education, empowerment and restoration.

Friday, volunteers from the United Way of Kershaw County and various businesses joined forces to help renovate Lil' Angels Child Development off of McRae Road in east Camden. The center is affiliated with 4K First Steps South Carolina and focuses on early childcare education.

The United Way of Kershaw County geared up for its 2016 fundraising campaign with a luncheon at the historic Robert Mills Courthouse for representatives from industrial sites throughout the county. Each year, the UWKC uses campaign donations to serve those in need in Kershaw County through funding its now 18 partner agencies.
