Saturday, Wateree Elementary School's Lego Robotic Team will compete in the FIRST LEGO League (FFL) robotics competition. Since the beginning of the school year, the team built and programmed its "Terminator" robot.
Artist-in-Residence Frank Thompson recently visited local schools including Jackson Elementary, Midway Elementary, Wateree Elementary and Doby's Mill Elementary schools to teach 2nd graders about acting.
Elgin Mayor Brad Hanley will not run for reelection in February. Hanley, elected four years ago in 2011, said he is still considering a run for a regular council seat in order to continue his public service. He said he would make a decision in the coming weeks.
Elgin voters will have the chance to vote for mayor and two positions on Elgin Town Council on Feb. 3, 2015. The official announcement for February's election came during council's Nov. 4 meeting. Those interested in running must register at Elgin Town Hall between Dec. 5 and 19. Candidates must be an Elgin resident to run for office.
Radiate Church will kick off its third annual "Cover Columbia" event on Sunday. During that week, church members will perform random acts of kindness along with community service in the Midlands, including Kershaw County.
New Lugoff-Elgin High School Principal Worth Thomasson wants students to understand that what they learn in the classroom can be applied to life outside the classroom. Thomasson, who moved from being principal at North Central High School in August, hopes to make that connection through promoting literacy this school year.
