United Way, local businesses team up for renovation

Friday, volunteers from the United Way of Kershaw County and various businesses joined forces to help renovate Lil' Angels Child Development off of McRae Road in east Camden. The center is affiliated with 4K First Steps South Carolina and focuses on early childcare education.

UWKC Industrial Luncheon kicks off 2016 fundraising

The United Way of Kershaw County geared up for its 2016 fundraising campaign with a luncheon at the historic Robert Mills Courthouse for representatives from industrial sites throughout the county. Each year, the UWKC uses campaign donations to serve those in need in Kershaw County through funding its now 18 partner agencies.

Habitat Store sales help put families into affordable housing

1019 Broad St. in downtown Camden doesn't appear any different from its neighboring stores at first glance. However, the Habitat Store's purpose is to use customer sales to help build houses for families in Kershaw County who apply with Habitat for Humanity of Kershaw County.

Elgin church hosts prayer vigil for Charleston

Sunday evening, Hillcrest Baptist Church hosted a community prayer vigil for the victims and families of the June 17 shooting during a night bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Nine African-American worshippers died in what has been reported as a hate crime.

Q&A with Miss Camden and Miss Camden Teen

Saturday marks the start of the Miss South Carolina and Miss South Carolina Teen competition for 78 young ladies, two of which will be representing Camden. Abbie Zvejnieks was crowned Miss Camden the beginning of this year along with Olivia Loynes who was crowned Miss Camden Teen. Abbie will be attending Wake Forest in the fall and Olivia is a rising junior at North Central High School.

United Way receives donated van

The United Way of Kershaw County recently received a donated van from Lugoff resident Donna Wodarczyk. Wodarczyk donated the van in honor of her late father, Richard Nielsson, who requested that the van be donated to a charity. UWKC president Donny Supplee says that the van will be used to provide transportation to people who need it. Volunteers from the community drive the vans to take people on errands free of charge. "We are serving needy folks so we have to supplement (the costs) through our fundraising. That's what our campaign is all about," Supplee said. The donated van ...
