Students at LeGrand Institute collect donations for Sistercare

Students from LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology are collecting donations for a local charity, Sistercare. Sistercare is a program of services for battered women and their children residing in Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry and Richland counties in South Carolina. Domestic violence is a far larger problem than most people realize. And unfortunately we see more and more women and children who need the help of organizations like Sistercare.

Photo cutline -- Wilson Mills of Camden laughs with Johnny Crowell, one of aviation's great early pioneers, during a luncheon Saturday at the Holiday Inn. Crowell was here for a meeting of the OX-5 Pioneers, a group made up primarily of men who were active in the early days of aviation. Crowell, 85, presented Mills with a plaque "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in advancing aviation and for his assistance and friendship for half a century."

Education basics

Every time test results are released from public schools in South Carolina, including those here in Kershaw County, there is either celebration or hand-wringing. Some years scores spike upwards, and in others years they disappoint. And here, as across the United States, various theories are advanced about what measures can be taken to improve school performance. Smaller schools and class sizes are often favorite subjects when it comes to "here's what we need to do." And of course, that involves pushing more taxpayer dollars towards education.
