‘Nutcracker’ returns to FAC with local talent

What has become a holiday tradition in Camden returns as the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County welcomes the Columbia City Ballet's (CCB) full-length production of "Nutcracker" to the stage of the Wood Auditorium on Dec. 2 and 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and children.

Camden student chosen homecoming representative

Camden resident Mary Margaret Green, a student at Thomas Sumter Academy in Dalzell, was chosen last month by members of her class to represent the ninth grade in the school's homecoming court. Her escort that evening was ninth grade class president Drake McCormick of Sumter. Thomas Sumter's varsity football team trounced Richard Winn Academy 34 to 0 during the homecoming game, a contributing step toward Thomas Sumter's 10-1 season and current SCISA Region AA Championship standing, the school's fourth year in a row.

Local cook wins first place for cake at S.C. State Fair

Jenny Elyand of Lugoff took home a first place ribbon for her cake (pictured above) in the S.C. State Fair Home and Craft Cake Decorating contest. Elyand competed in the amateur division and won a $37 for her efforts. This is the first cake she has entered in a contest. "I've been making cakes as a hobby for a while, but I never did anything like this," she said. "It really wasn't as hard as it looks."

Eagle Scout completes prayer garden for Lugoff Church

Tyler Hand, above, built a prayer garden as his Eagle Scout Project for the Lugoff First Baptist Church Cemetery. Tyler is a senior patrol leader in Troop 303, Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church in Camden. The troop is part of the Wateree district of the Indian Waters Council. Tyler has been a scout since starting as a tiger cub in first grade. He is currently attending Lugoff-Elgin High School as a freshman. Tyler has earned 24 merit badges including 12 Eagle badges. Kershaw County bands wrap up successful season

When you think of something competitive, what do you think about? Most people relate it to a sport, such as football or basketball. When I think of something competitive, I think about marching band. Every year, thousands of high school students across the state work from mid-July through October to prepare for marching band competitions. This is no different in our county. This year, all three high schools: Lugoff-Elgin, Camden, and North Central bands all participated in competitions this season.

Date set for Lights of Lugoff parade

The 2010 Lights of Lugoff Parade will be held Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. As in the past, the parade will travel down U.S. 1 from the BP Station to S.C. 34, or the McDonald's. The Lights of Lugoff Parade is one of the few night time parades in the state. The annual parade sponsor is the Lugoff Optimist Club along with local businesses.
