KCMA music competition Feb. 10

The Kershaw County Music Association (KCMA), an affiliate member of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) will hold its annual music scholarship competition on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the Wood Auditorium on the FAC campus. The deadline for submissions is February 2. Applications, along with rules and regulations, can be found on the FAC website at There is a $5 application fee.

Highland games come to Camden

In March 2018, Camden will join the ranks of South Carolina cities Aiken, Charleston, Greenville, Clover, Myrtle Beach and Columbia to host a NASGA-certified Highland Games. NASGA, the North American Scottish Games Athletics, was founded in 1976 and is dedicated to the promotion and understanding of Scottish Heavy Events competition in North America. The 2018 games will be held during the 2nd Annual Irish Fest Camden on Saturday, March 3, beginning with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. at the corner of Rutledge and Church streets.

First Palmetto Bank partnered with Food for the Soul

First Palmetto Bank again partnered with Food for the Soul for its annual Christmas charity drive to help the less fortunate in Kershaw County. Nearly 1,200 items totaling 8,000 pounds were donated by bank employees, who competed against each other in evenly-divided teams to raise donations. The list of donated items expanded this year to include detergents, paper towels, plates and other items in addition to non-perishable foods and other dry goods.

The Camden Garden Club will hold its next meeting at Pinegrove Plantation, the home of Elizabeth Fort. The classic Southern house has a wonderful wrap-around porch, and is nestled among huge pecan trees.

Community Holiday Fair

Bethune Elementary School recently hosted a Community Holiday Fair. During the hustle and bustle of vendors and shoppers, third grade student Ren Schweikert was spotted sitting alone with a sign reading "Stories- twenty five cents!" Bethune's custodian, Mr. Roy Miller, could not resist the cuteness and stopped to hear a story from Ren.

Many Camdenites attended monthly concerts in Columbia (and still do) and, due to Larry Conger's influence, the band did an occasional concert here in Camden.

Auditions for The Little Mermaid Jr. are Jan. 7 & 8

Auditions for The Little Mermaid Jr. will be on Sunday, Jan. 7 and Monday, Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Wood Auditorium. Auditions are open to all children from first through eighth grades. There is no audition fee. Production dates are March 8-11, 2018. The Little Mermaid Jr. will be directed by Education and Theatre Director Jami Steele.
