Lugoff Elgin High School student wins state 4H award

Cleo Lampert has always had a special place in her heart for animals, specifically horses. She started taking riding lessons at her horse trainer's farm where regular 4H club meetings were also held. Cleo attended a few meetings, and thought it was fun. At 8 years old, Cleo joined the West Wateree Ropes and Reins 4H club and recently joined the Kershaw County 4H Horse Club. Over the past eight years, her main focus areas have been horses and agriculture.

Kershaw Farmers Market hosts Farm Olympics

The Kershaw County Farmers Market hosted the Farm Olympics Saturday to celebrate National Farmers Market Week. Kevin Pasche and Double A D.J. hosted the event. Participants signed up for various activities such as watermelon horseshoes and a watermelon carving contest.

Battle of Camden Remembrance Day

The redcoats will be returning to Camden. On Aug. 18 , Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site will be having its Battle of Camden Remembrance Day. The "No Battle" fun family outing will include several activities for people of all age groups to enjoy.

Hengst employees drop the pounds

Employees of Hengst of North America recently concluded Hengst's Biggest Loser contest. Hengst, which manufactures motor vehicle parts, had 89 participants from their Camden and Warren, Michigan sites lose a total of 367 pounds between April 1 and June 30. Prizes were awarded to the top three biggest losers.

On July 26, a reception was hosted by the Camden Archives following the Larry Doby forever stamp unveiling ceremony. The Camden Fire Department assisted by grilling hot dogs, serving popcorn, Coca-Colas and peanuts.

CLASS act

The 2012 CLASS (Camden Lugoff Area Shag Society) Shag Blast was held June 9 at the Camden Shrine Club. The annual event is the club's major fundraiser, and this year's was a night of "great food, great music and great fellowship," according to CLASS Shag Blast Chairman Ray Amyette. With the support of sponsors, club members and others, CLASS donated $3,400 -- $1,700 each – to the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and Food for the Soul of Kershaw County. ‘Pass the Plate’ for Food for the Soul

Food for the Soul, the Camden-based ministry that provides meals to the hungry and temporary emergency shelter and services for the homeless in Kershaw County, is conducting its second annual "Pass the Plate" fundraising campaign. The campaign, which will conclude Aug. 12, asks local civic groups, community organizations, businesses and churches around the county to "pass the plate" to support the organization in its efforts to end hunger and homelessness in Kershaw County.

Mr. and Mrs. Florian celebrate 60 years

Fred J. Florian and Pearl Polinski Florian of Camden Celebrated 60 years of marriage Nov. 20. The couple married in 1954 at St. Hilary's Catholic Church in Washington, Pa. They have five sons: Fred. M, Tony, Robert, Bill and Chris. The couple has four grandchildren: Derick, Thomas, Kayla and Rachel.

Howard and Cornelia Joy celebrate 60 years

Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. They have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: James, Sheena, Joy, Jazmin, Asha, Kier and Izaiah. The couple plans to celebrate the special occasion with their children and grandchildren at a later date.

Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
