Camden ART Exhibition to Open at Bassett Gallery

Camden ART will open its fall show in the Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County on Thursday with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. before the opening night of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." The Camden ART exhibit will be on display in the Bassett Gallery until Jan. 16, 2015.

John D. Kennedy Chapter of UDC unveils grave marker

On Oct. 25, members of the John D. Kennedy Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and Joseph Kershaw Confederate Veterans, as well as other friends and family members of UDC member Mary Elizabeth Pitts Hough, gathered at the Jeter Family Cemetery in Carlisle for the unveiling of her Daughter of the Confederacy grave marker. Hough was made an honorary member because of her service as histographer for more than 30 years.

LEMS students collect food items for staff member

The motto at Lugoff Elgin Middle School is "Understanding hearts and positive attitudes make a GREAT school" and the week of Thanksgiving, LEMS students put their motto into action. Miss Pearl, a former custodian, lost her house and all its contents to a fire, and students decided the Thanksgiving season was the perfect time to show Miss Pearl their gratitude.

Mrs. Louise Anthony of Camden celebrated her 85th birthday July 12 at the Robert Mills Courthouse. Around 90 of Anthony's family members and friends attended.

Crystal Noelle Johnson of Camden and Garrett Thomas Mann of Peachtree City, GA were united in marriage on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at six o'clock in the evening at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Camden. Reverend Willie D. Dennis officiated the double-ring ceremony. A reception followed the ceremony at TenEleven Galleria in Camden with music provided by Big Time Entertainment of Columbia, SC.

Camden Community Concert Band presents holiday concert

The Camden Community Concert Band will present its holiday concert starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 in the Performing Arts Center at Camden High School. The concert is free and open to the public. Trumpeter Rusty Major is pictured practicing during a recent rehearsal. The CCCB will perform many Christmas classics such as "Oh Come All Ye Faithful" and "Greensleeves," and will feature "Suite from The Nutcracker" as well as crowd favorite "Sleigh Ride".

The Camden Writers have whipped up a book titled "Serving Up Memory," which features short stories, recipes and poetry. Local book store Books on Broad will hold a book launch Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with its holiday open house. Samples of recipes featured in the book will be available.

FAC presents Canine Classic for the Arts

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County will hold a new fundraiser this year. The Canine Classic for the Arts will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Meeting Place in Cassatt. This fundraiser combines the community's love for arts, canine friends and its love of the hunt to help raise money for the arts in Kershaw County. Spectators and participants will be able to get to all areas of the event via golf carts and wagons. Parking will be available on site. All proceeds will benefit the FAC.

After 20 years of service, Gunnery Sgt. Michael E. Gladden retired from the United States Marine Corps on Nov. 26. GySgt. Gladden is the son of Glenda T. Gladden, of Camden.
