Challengers in the Kershaw County Farmers Market's recent corn shucking contest ripped into the competition with gusto. Despite the day starting with intense temperatures, the community gathered at the downtown Camden venue to enjoy a live DJ, food, fun and, of course, corn.

‘Pass the Plate’ for Food for the Soul

Food for the Soul, the Camden-based ministry that provides meals to the hungry and temporary emergency shelter and services for the homeless in Kershaw County, is conducting its second annual "Pass the Plate" fundraising campaign. The campaign, which will conclude Aug. 12, asks local civic groups, community organizations, businesses and churches around the county to "pass the plate" to support the organization in its efforts to end hunger and homelessness in Kershaw County.

Fourth of July parade

The Camden First Baptist Church Children's saluted the Fourth of July with its annual parade. Heading out at 9:30 a.m. July 3, the center's children and staff -- dressed in red, white and blue and wearing festive hats -- walked through downtown carrying banners and waving flags, inspiring the holiday spirit in business neighbors. In all, 21 teachers and 65 youngsters – infants through fifth-graders – celebrated the patriotic holiday.

Camden native pens book that asks: coincidence or divine creation?

Kathryn Hewitt became pregnant at 15. Her mother was determined that she wouldn't become a statistic, so Hewitt continued her education and went on to college while raising her son. It was extremely challenging, the Camden native recalls, and on more than one occasion she thought she couldn't do it … but she did.

Trees get thirsty, too

Summer is officially here and we now have the temperatures to prove it! Along with high temperatures come afternoon showers and sometimes downright gully-washer rains. These rain events can be quite dramatic and appear like many inches have fallen from the sky. Unfortunately, most times this is not the case. Even in the rare occasions when we do actually get close to 1 inch of rain, it falls so hard and fast that the ground has little time to absorb it.

Hobkirk Hill Chapter DAR awards first scholarships

This is the first year the Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has given (DAR) scholarships. For the past three years, we have had luncheons to raise money for a high school senior. Members of the DAR and benevolent citizens have contributed enough so that we are able to donate $500 scholarships to the following deserving seniors. These students have shown an interest in preserving history. They have participated in community activities and achieved high academic standards.

Mitchell, Clemson team engineer water system for Haitian village

Joshua Mitchell of Elgin traveled to Haiti in June with Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries for the dedication of a water system in an area that has been plagued by cholera since the 2010 earthquake that leveled the country's capital.

Feels like home

Salkehatchie Summer Service meets every summer for a week to provide renovations to homes in South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina. The Wateree camp is sponsored by Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church to rebuild homes in Camden. Youth from all over the area come together to be a part of a great experience that's beneficial to those in need.

Mr. and Mrs. Florian celebrate 60 years

Fred J. Florian and Pearl Polinski Florian of Camden Celebrated 60 years of marriage Nov. 20. The couple married in 1954 at St. Hilary's Catholic Church in Washington, Pa. They have five sons: Fred. M, Tony, Robert, Bill and Chris. The couple has four grandchildren: Derick, Thomas, Kayla and Rachel.

Howard and Cornelia Joy celebrate 60 years

Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. They have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: James, Sheena, Joy, Jazmin, Asha, Kier and Izaiah. The couple plans to celebrate the special occasion with their children and grandchildren at a later date.

Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
