4H summer camp registration occurring

There will be a 4H camp this summer at Camp Long in Aiken, S.C. The camp is for ages 8 to 14 and will take place from June 10 to 14.

Thompson awarded Living the Legacy award

Dr. Raushannee R. Thompson, a Lugoff native, was recently awarded the Living the Legacy Award by the Columbia S.C. section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). The NCNW was founded in 1935 and has the mission to lead, develop, and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities. The Living the Legacy award was given in recognition of Thompson's "worthwhile service to humanity."

Lugoff’s Allen nominated for Pushcart Prize

Lauren Allen of Lugoff has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize in poetry. Her poem "Corduroy Road," was nominated by the editors of The Petigru Review, South Carolina Writers Workshop's anthology. It will compete with other nominated short stories, poems, and essays to be included in the annual collection.

Fourth annual car show in Historic Boykin

On March 9, the Fourth Annual Car Show at the Historic Boykin Site in Boykin will be held. Registration will run from 8 to 11 a.m. and trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. Entry fee is $10 and burgers and hot dogs will also be sold. Proceeds will go to the Greenville Shrine Hospital for Children.

Margot Rochester Landscape Award accepting nominations

Nominations for the Margot Rochester Landscape Award are now being received by the city of Camden Parks and Trees Commission. The award recognizes a commercial business, public institution, organization, church or school for beautifying Camden with "exceptional landscaping and grounds maintenance." Last year, Camden Elementary School's sensory garden was selected for the 2012 Landscape Award winner.

FAC to host Camden ART meeting on March 4

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County is presenting a slide show demonstration and hands-on project featuring Margaret Bass with Fletcher Bass assisting. The presentation will take place March 4 at 7 p.m. at 810 Lyttleton Street in the Bassett Gallery. The showing is entitled "The Many Uses of Corn in Fine Art and Craft."

Camden Rotary celebrates 85 years

Camden Rotary, a chapter of Rotary International, was founded 86 years ago on October 11, 1927. In 2012, the organization celebrated 85 years of service in the Camden community. Charter members included Camden Rotary President Dr. John Corbett, Ralph N. Shannon as secretary-treasurer and A. Stanley Llewellyn as the vice president. Camden Rotary's Rotary Bell, which is still in use today, was presented in 1928 by John Wilson of Sumter.

Robert Ariail show March 7

Robert Ariail's original editorial cartoons will be available for viewing and purchase at City Art in Columbia starting on March 7. Ariail, who was the recipient of the 2012 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for Individual Artist and the Berryman Award, has agreed to donate his remaining work to the USC Political Collections at the Hollings Library in the near future. Foster families for the shelter are needed

The Walter M. Crowe animal shelter is in desperate need for temporary foster homes for dogs leaving for rescue groups up north. If you are interested please call the shelter at 425-6016 as soon as possible. Animals must be out of the shelter for two weeks in a foster home before they can leave.

Price House exhibit honors, remembers Black History Month

"Its not Black History, It's American History -- even though there are some dark chapters," said Price House Commission member Clifton Harryton Anderson. For more than 10 years, Anderson has served as the coordinator for the Black History poster exhibit. This year's exhibit was on display Feb. 20 through Feb. 24.

LeGrand Institute practices fire safety

Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition

There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
