Local cook wins first place for cake at S.C. State Fair

Jenny Elyand of Lugoff took home a first place ribbon for her cake (pictured above) in the S.C. State Fair Home and Craft Cake Decorating contest. Elyand competed in the amateur division and won a $37 for her efforts. This is the first cake she has entered in a contest. "I've been making cakes as a hobby for a while, but I never did anything like this," she said. "It really wasn't as hard as it looks."

Happy 90th Birthday!

Polly Todd of Camden celebrated her 90th birthday on Nov. 6. She is the widow of the late Archie "Bubber" Todd Jr. She was born Nov. 6, 1920 in Anderson and moved to Camden in 1970 with her family. She retired from teaching math at Camden High School in 1982. Mrs. Todd celebrated her birthday last Saturday with family and friends at Pinedale Residential Center in Camden.

LeGrand Institute practices fire safety

Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition

There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia.
