KC teens attend conference of more than 1,500 youth

Latter-day Saint teenagers from North and South Carolina gathered last week on the campus of East Carolina University for a Christian youth conference. The theme of the conference "One, But Not Alone" is based on the New Testament scripture "So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another" (Romans 12:5).

Local artist creates painting for KershawHealth

Local artist Lisa Boykin Adams has donated her painting entitled "Healing Trees" to KershawHealth. Depicting trees along the Wateree River, the three-part painting was created by Adams to hang in the lobby of the healthcare system's Outpatient Center in Elgin.

Local Master Gardners graduate

Six Kershaw County Master Gardeners recently graduated by completing the required 40 hours of volunteer time, and receiving their certificate from Vickie Bertagnolli-Heller, local Master Gardener coordinator. The group also welcomed Joe Dorton and Albert Reed who finished the classroom instruction given by Clemson University agents and qualified as Master Gardeners in May. These gentlemen now have to volunteer 40 hours before they become certified Master Gardeners.

Three of Camden’s Confederate memorials honored during 100 year monument rededication ceremony

In June the S. C. Division Children of the Confederacy (C of C) along with John D. Kennedy Chapter No. 308 United Daughters of the Confederacy and Joseph B. Kershaw Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp No. 81 rededicated three of Camden's Confederate Monuments which were erected in 1911: The Pantheon in Rectory Square, The Richard Kirkland Memorial Fountain in Hampton Park, and Richard Kirkland's Grave in Quaker Cemetery.

Kershaw County Back to School Bash helps provide school supplies to needy families

The Kershaw County Back to School Bash Committee utilizes community resources to provide free school supplies to area youth and help families access information and services within the community. The committee is celebrating its 15th year of service to the community and anticipates assisting approximately 1,500 elementary, middle, high and college students from Kershaw County and surrounding areas.

American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 installs new officers, helps provide scholarship money for student

The American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 participated in selecting and sponsoring five delegates from Kershaw County to attend Palmetto Girls State June 12-18. The tuition of each student was shared by the unit and American Legion Post 17 members.

CLASS Shag Blast 2011

The 2011 CLASS Shag Blast was held June 11 at the Camden Shrine Club. It is the Camden Lugoff Area Shag Society's annual major fund raising event. This year the CLASS Shag Blast benefited the Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County and Food for the Soul of Kershaw County. Thanks to sponsors and the work of club members, $3,600 was donated to the organizations. This is the most the club has been able to donate in the last seven years.

Celebrating Independence Day

Students in the Camden First Baptist Kindergarten and Child Care walked in the church's annual Fourth of July Parade in honor of Independence Day on June 30. In total, 80 children, 19 teachers and two parents participated. The group started at the church on Walnut Street, turned rights on Broad Street, turned right on DeKalb Street and doubled back to Walnut Street to complete the parade. Luanne Stallings directed the event.

Fred J. Florian and Pearl Polinski Florian of Camden Celebrated 60 years of marriage Nov. 20. The couple married in 1954 at St. Hilary's Catholic Church in Washington, Pa. They have five sons: Fred. M, Tony, Robert, Bill and Chris. The couple has four grandchildren: Derick, Thomas, Kayla and Rachel.

Howard and Cornelia Joy celebrate 60 years

Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. They have six grandchildren and one great-grandchild: James, Sheena, Joy, Jazmin, Asha, Kier and Izaiah. The couple plans to celebrate the special occasion with their children and grandchildren at a later date.

Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
