Vet office donates $1,600 to animal shelter

The Wateree Animal Hospital in Elgin held a fundraiser, Bow Wow Backyard Sale, to raise money for the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. The Wateree Animal Hospital was able to make a $1,600 donation after the sale. The Bow Wow Backyard sale was made possible by donations from community members. The event also featured a k9 exhibition. Organizers plan to have a second sale in the fall.

Honorary Girl Scout Troop formed to include S.C. House of Representative’s ladies

Women from the House of Representatives came together on May 11 to form the first-ever South Carolina Honorary Girl Scout Troop. Given the troop number 1912, in recognition of the year Girl Scouts was founded, the membership is made up of all 16 women in the House of Representatives. The two Girl Scout councils in the state, Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina and Girl Scouts of South Carolina – Mountains to Midlands, hosted the late afternoon tea across the street from the State Capitol at the Capital City Club.

Cobb named Miss Lugoff-Elgin Teen 2011

During a Sunday afternoon reception, the newly formed Miss Lugoff-Elgin Scholarship Pageant committee appointed 16-year-old Lugoff resident Julianna Cobb as the first Miss Lugoff-Elgin Teen to compete for the state title this July in Columbia. As a committee-appointed queen, Cobb will be an "at large" contestant in the state competition where she will compete in interview, fitness wear, talent, evening gown and on-stage personality. In addition to her title, Cobb, a junior at Lugoff-Elgin High School, will also be the recipient of a $250 scholarship.

Miss L-E, Junior Miss L-E pageant winners announced

Lugoff Elgin High School and the ABLE Club of S.C. made history by crowning a 2011 Junior Miss L-E, Mary Katherine Rogers, in the afternoon pageant and 2011 Miss L-E, Chelsea Gantt, in the evening pageant. All 65 contestants danced their way in through the opening number of "Dynamite." The competition then continued in casual wear, evening wear and on stage questions. Both queens will have the opportunity to complete in LMSC pageant on June 18. Bloodhounds visit Kershaw County Library

Karl Allen with Black River Rescue and his assistant Ann Marie Holland made presentations about bloodhounds at both the Camden and Elgin branches of the Kershaw County Library. The pair taught both children and adults how to respond if they find themselves lost in the woods, as well as clarified many misconceptions about the breed. Allen, a former deputy with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, specializes in training and handling bloodhounds for search and rescue. Refections to perform for Finally Friday concert series

Put on your dancing shoes! Camden favorite Reflections is back to perform at the May installment of the popular outdoor concert series Finally Friday at the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County on Friday. The concert will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and will take place behind the Wood Auditorium. With all of the band members having roots in Camden, it is sure to be a big crowd.

2011 Miss Heart of America

Bre'Anna T. Hayes was selected to represent South Carolina as the 2011 Miss Heart of America. She will compete for Nationals in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 19, 2011. The Queens of Miss Heart of America represent poise, personality, beauty and involvement in community service; therefore, Bre'Anna will be volunteering and making various appearances in the community service. A crowd of about 50 people gathered at Kirkwood Common, on the site of the Revolutionary War Battle of Hobkirk Hill in Camden, South Carolina on April 17 to commemorate the 230th anniversary of The Battle of Hobkirk Hill fought on April 25, 1781.

Ceremony honors POWs, MIAs, properly disposes 52 American flags

On April 16 at noon, the Rolling Thunder Chapter 1 Motorcycle Club held a ceremony to honor all prisoners of war and missing in action veterans from all wars. The ceremony recognized all branches of the service. This was held at the VFW Post 8346, Lake Wateree, where the POW-MIA flag is flown under the American flag daily.

Hand earns Eagle Scout title with Troop 303

Tyler Hand received the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle Scout March 26. Tyler is a member of Troop 303, sponsored by Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. Tyler has been a member of Troop 303 since January 2008 when his parents moved to Lugoff from Illinois.

Lugoff teen wins ‘Kershaw County’s Got Talent’

After three nights of auditions, 42 total contestants; and 17 finalists, a winner was named! Austin Veverica, a 14-year-old from Lugoff, was declared the winner of the first annual Kershaw County's Got Talent produced by the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) April 28.

Celebrating National Nursing Home Week

The residents at Springdale Health Care celebrated in style the week of May 8-14. Administrators and staff saluted residents during National Nursing Home Week with a special performance from the Lugoff-Elgin High School band, as well as a visit from Camden Mayor Jeffrey Graham. Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
