Food for the Soul Passes the Plate
Food for the Soul, a Camden-based ministry that provides meals to the hungry and homeless in Kershaw County, will kick off its Pass the Plate! fundraising campaign on Sunday, when several area churches will collect special offerings to support the charitable organization. The campaign, which will conclude Sunday, August 14, will focus on "passing the plate" in local civic groups, community organizations, businesses and churches around the county.
Camden Rotary Club awards scholarships
The Camden Rotary Club awarded six scholarships to local seniors. Four students received $1,000 each and two students received $500 each for having the two highest SAT/ACT scores at Camden High School. FRC to hold second annual Girl Power event
Lady Gamecock coach and three-time Olympic gold medalist Dawn Staley and Ms. South Carolina -- United States 2011 Laura Holley will offer motivational speeches at the Second annual Girl Power event sponsored by the Family Resource Center Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m. at the Health Resource Center at 124 Battleship Road in Camden.
Local Red Cross reaches out for help
Volunteers of the Kershaw County Red Cross Center are on call 24 hours a day, seven days of the week to respond to any disasters that may occur and to deliver emergency communications to members of the armed

Helping those in need
Roosevelt Halley (left) and David Engram (right) left on May 19 to help with the relief efforts in Epes, Ala., where the homes of hundreds of people were torn apart in late April by violent storms and tornados. Halley and Engram helped work on damaged homes of victims. They also carried a truckload of supplies with them. Elgin's EPIC adventure
The Elgin Police Department (EPD) delivered a load of fun at its first Elgin Podunk International Challenge (EPIC) May 14 to raise money for the EPD's annual Toy Round Up and Caring Hands charity, which provides food and toys to families during the holiday season. Smith Scholarship awarded to six local students
The late James and Nell Smith, former co-owners of Camden Food Shop, created a scholarship for students attending local Baptist churches with high academic achievement.
King Haiglar Garden Club announces 2011-12 officers
The May meeting of the King Haiglar Garden Club was held May 9 at Proctor Hall. Officers for the 2011-12 garden club year were installed and awards for the 2010-11 garden club year were presented. True to his promise
Keeping true to a promise he made to a group of fifth-graders at Bethune Elementary School in 2005, Clifton Harryton Anderson (far right), a retired mental health professional, volunteer mentor and the recipient of the Order of Silver Crescent, the state's highest honor for volunteer and community service, has made unannounced regular visits with the students each year since 2005.

Vet office donates $1,600 to animal shelter
The Wateree Animal Hospital in Elgin held a fundraiser, Bow Wow Backyard Sale, to raise money for the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. The Wateree Animal Hospital was able to make a $1,600 donation after the sale. The Bow Wow Backyard sale was made possible by donations from community members. The event also featured a k9 exhibition. Organizers plan to have a second sale in the fall.
Honorary Girl Scout Troop formed to include S.C. House of Representative’s ladies
Women from the House of Representatives came together on May 11 to form the first-ever South Carolina Honorary Girl Scout Troop.
