United Way “Be A Bunny” program celebrates 10 years

The United Way Be A Bunny program enlists people from the community to fill Easter baskets for individuals representing three United Way agencies, the Council on Aging, Family Resource Center and the Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, and 132 children from the Kershaw County School District. An unbelievable amount of thought and care goes into putting together more than 200 Easter baskets.

U.S. Air Force vets reunite

The last time Charles Moore of Elgin (right) saw Eugene Rock (left) was around late 1957. Moore, a member of American Legion Post 17, kept an old picture of the men he served with in the U.S. Air Force. The picture included all the names and hometowns of the men.

Rollins to speak at walk against child abuse and sexual assault

The Rev. Dr. Eugene Rollins, therapist, author and pastor at Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church, will be the keynote speaker at the Family Resource Center's annual awareness walk on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m.-noon. This year, the walk's theme is "It's Time to Get Involved."

The Camden First United Methodist Women, in with association the South Carolina Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and Family Resource Center will host a Teenage Pregnancy Prevention 3K Walk-a-thon May 14 in Camden.

Student raises money for charity

On St. Patrick's Day Anthony Sheheen (second from right), age 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Sheheen, gave $220 each to Camden Elementary School and the Walter M. Crowe Animal Shelter. Hospital Auxiliary contributes medical equipment to save lives

In early 1967 the Kershaw County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary purchased a heart monitor/defibrillator and donated it to the hospital. On June 23, 1967, it was used for the first time to save the life of an eight-year old Camden girl who had accidently received a lethal electric shock about 2:15 that afternoon.

Happy 60th Anniversary!

Thomas and Marian McCaskill of Lugoff will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on April 16, 2011 with family and friends. They have three daughters, Cheryl Schwartz (Billy), Connie Frith (Bill) and Carol Johnson (Craig) all of Lugoff and a deceased son, Thomas McCaskill III of Oklahoma. They are blessed with nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Celebrating 50 years together

Mr. and Mrs. Wylie Clint Stockman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 27, 2011 at a party with family and friends. Wylie and Betty were married April 5, 1961. They have four children, Timmy Stockman, Lynda Watson (Butch), Becky Whitehouse (Randy), and Jason Stockman (Bridget) all of Lugoff. They are the proud grandparents of eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They will also celebrate with a trip to Memphis, Tenn. in April.

FAC to host 6th annual ‘Jazz at the Center Music Festival’

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) will present its sixth annual "Jazz at the Center Music Festival," April 15-16, in historic downtown Camden. This year's festival will feature the talents of artists such as Jimmy Bruno (Philadelphia) and Ben Tucker (Georgia) along with some of the finest jazz musicians from Alabama and South Carolina. With both free and ticketed performances throughout the weekend, this event is affordable for all jazz lovers.

Former Camdenite wins ‘Best In Show’

Former Camdenite Manda McKay's painting "Love You To Death" won "Best In Show" at Southworks 2013. The Oconee County Arts Foundation (OCAF) hosted the opening reception April 12 in Watkinsville, Georgia. McKay grew up in Camden and graduated from Camden High School.

LeGrand Institute practices fire safety

Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition

There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia.
