FCA rally with Adrian Despres and Carolina Panther Thomas Austin to be held March 25

Lugoff-Elgin High School's (L-EHS) Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host a Kershaw County FCA rally on March 25. The rally will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the L-EHS gym.

Camden Rotary celebrates 85 years

Camden Rotary, a chapter of Rotary International, was founded 86 years ago on October 11, 1927. In 2012, the organization celebrated 85 years of service in the Camden community. Charter members included Camden Rotary President Dr. John Corbett, Ralph N. Shannon as secretary-treasurer and A. Stanley Llewellyn as the vice president. Camden Rotary's Rotary Bell, which is still in use today, was presented in 1928 by John Wilson of Sumter.

Foster families for the shelter are needed

The Walter M. Crowe animal shelter is in desperate need for temporary foster homes for dogs leaving for rescue groups up north. If you are interested please call the shelter at 425-6016 as soon as possible. Animals must be out of the shelter for two weeks in a foster home before they can leave.

Farmers Market Open House for vendors, March 5

The 2013 Kershaw County Farmers Market Vendor Open House will be held on March 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Extension Homemakers Building, 634 W. DeKalb St., Camden. Price House exhibit honors, remembers Black History Month

"Its not Black History, It's American History -- even though there are some dark chapters," said Price House Commission member Clifton Harryton Anderson. For more than 10 years, Anderson has served as the coordinator for the Black History poster exhibit. This year's exhibit was on display Feb. 20 through Feb. 24.

Grace Episcopal Church receives new acolyte statue

Sculptor Bob Baronowski's statue of an acolyte was recently added to the Memorial Garden of Grace Episcopal Church at 1315 Lyttleton St. in Camden. The bronze figure is 4 feet, 6 inches tall and faces the church as if leading a procession toward the building. Mr. Baronowski is a member of the National Scupture Society and the American Medallic Sculpture Association. Baronowski's works consist of portraiture, figurative and relief sculpture in terra cotta and hot and cold cast bronze. The garden is open to the community.

Little Miss/Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant

The Little Miss/Teen Miss Camden-Kershaw County pageant was held Feb. 9, in Camden. Twenty contestants competed for the Camden and Kershaw County titles. The winners will compete in the Little Miss South Carolina pageant in June in Hartsville.

Price House to host annual Black History month exhibit, Bethlehem Missionary Baptist to host Sunday

On the first floor of Camden's historic Price House, located at Broad and York streets, the annual Black History Month exhibit will be held today through Sunday, from noon to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Each middle school and high school, including Camden Military Academy, were invited to submit a poster for the exhibit.

"A Year with Frog and Toad" coming to the Wood Auditorium

The Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is bringing another wonderful children's show to the FAC. After several sell-out shows in Columbia, the Columbia Children's Theatre (CCT) will present the musical comedy A Year with Frog and Toad, Saturday, in the Wood Auditorium. Show time is 2 p.m. Tickets are $8. A Year with Frog and Toad is sponsored by Modern Turf.

L-EHS graduate Kinsey Rogers finds her passion at the City of Refuge

Lugoff native and College of Charleston junior Kinsey Rogers got the opportunity of a lifetime -- to visit 14 countries in three and a half months during the Semester at Sea (SAS), Fall 2012 Atlantic Exploration. During the trip, Rogers' time with an orphanage in Ghana inspired her to bring a part of her experience back to her hometown.

Poetry Series offered at the Kershaw County Library

Join the library for a five week program featuring five of our most famous modern American poets. "Modern American Poets: Voices and Visions" includes readings, discussion as well as showing of videos about each of the poets. Moderated by USC English professor Dr. Bill Funderburk, each weekly session features a different poet.

Annual Gospel Fest and Heritage Tea planned at the FAC of Kershaw County

The Multi-Cultural Committee of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is pleased to announce two annual events celebrating Black History Month. The eighth annual Gospel Fest takes place February 16, followed by the Heritage Tea Celebration on February 17. This dedicated committee has put together these special programs celebrating the spirit of community with a special emphasis on Black History at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC.) Sponsorship of this weekend's celebration is provided by the Piggly Wiggly of Camden and Kohn-Springs Group, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

World’s Miss Tourism Pageant

Cassandra Grace Gibson of Lugoff will be representing South Carolina in the World's Miss Tourism Pageant. The pageant takes place Friday, July 30 through Sunday, Aug. 2 in Clarksville, Tenn. Casey, a student at North Central High School, currently holds the title of World's Miss Teen South Carolina Tourism 2015. She will be competing against teens from all over the United States, as well as Canada and the Bahamas. Pageant competition categories include beauty, photogenic, interview and theme-wear representing the contestant's state.

Mary-Grace Hill

Nine year old actress Mary-Grace Hill, a student at Wateree Elementary School and daughter of Moichelle Hill, was recently in a commercial with S.C. State Treasurer Curtis M. Loftis Jr. The commercial, which promotes the State Treasurer's Office's Future Scholars incentive, was filmed June 23. Mary-Grace and her twin brother, Blaize, also an actor, have appeared in several movies including "Unknown", "Ashby", "Far From an Altar Call", "Unspoken Words", and "The Imperfect Human", as well as participated in Celebrity Cancer Runway Showcases and appeared in a Citi Trends commercial.
