School programs, students improve with proper support
I would first like to thank everyone personally that supported the North Central and Lugoff Elgin marching bands as they traveled to Disney World in February to march in Disney parades. Both ensembles had great performances and both were very well complimented by the Disney staff, parents, and visitors to the Disney parks. Thank you again to everyone that financially supported these two ensembles.
Annual race raises money for CMC
The Community Medical Clinic of Kershaw County will hold its fourth annual Clinic Classic 5K walk/run and 10k run on April 16 at 8:30 a.m.

Boykin artist wins ‘best in show’
Denise L. Greer, an artist in Boykin, recently won "Best In Show" out of 79 entries at the Trenholm Artist's Guild (TAG) Show. It is being held at the HoFP Gallery in Columbia. The show will be on display till March 25.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boating safety class
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a safe boating class on May 7 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The boating class will be held at the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office training room in Lugoff. The address is 821 Ridgeway Road, Lugoff.

Fred and Gloria Clements were married 60 years ago today on March 14, 1951. Fred is originally from Vesuvius, Va., and Gloria was born in Fort Lawn, S.C. USC football player makes Camden mother proud
Last month, Kenny Davis (left) made his mother, teammates and community proud. Davis, a defensive tackle for the USC Gamecocks, is a former student of North Central High School and a graduate of Newberry High School. Eagle Scout finishes project for Historic Camden

LeGrand Institute practices fire safety
Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated the first week in May as Youth Week to honor America's Junior Citizens for their accomplishments.
Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
