Nursing Home Week celebrated

Residents at the Karesh Wing Long Term Care Center and Springdale Health Care celebrated in style the week of May 13-19. Administrators and staff saluted the residents during National Nursing Home Week.

Native American program planned Saturday

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Kids ages 6 to 12, parents and grandparents, come meet Walks With Horses (WWH) and her miniature horse, Great Heart, who often is commercially photographed with kids. WWH will tell about the life of the war pony. She will teach participants about some of the Native American symbols. Kids will get to tell their own stories by choosing and coloring symbols on the take-home horse drawings provided. They will also hear Native American stories about how the rabbit got long ears, the bear got a short tail and others.

Friends of the library to meet

The Friends of the Kershaw County Library will hold its annual meeting at Indigo Jones at 6 p.m. on Thursday. After a short business meeting to elect officers for next year, the group will enjoy socializing and playing trivia. All members are encouraged to attend.

Local students to compete for Teen Miss South Carolina title

Miss Lugoff-Elgin High School, Katie Johnson, daughter of Craig and Carol Johnson of Lugoff; and Junior Miss Lugoff-Elgin High School, Danielle Moore, daughter of Ken and Darlene Moore of Lugoff, will compete in the Teen Miss South Carolina Pageant at historic Center Theater in Hartsville Thursday through Saturday. Katie was a recent Distinguished Honor Graduate from L-EHS and plans to attend College of Charleston in the Fall. Danielle is a rising Junior at L-EHS. CAMDEN – The recent launch of the Kershaw County Housing Authority will focus greater attention on the county's housing needs, according to leaders of a local alliance that has coordinated housing activities since 1989. Free meals available for summer programs

When school lets out for the summer, many children may not have access to a nutritious meal during the day. With this in mind, the Kershaw County School District's Nutrition and School Food Services and the United Way of Kershaw County want to remind the community that meal service for all qualified summer programs is available. The meal service consists of breakfast, lunch and a snack.

Legacy Run raises more than $10,000

The American Legion Riders of South Carolina conducted a statewide American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund Benefit Run April 14-15. The 612-mile run involved ALR chapters and American Legion posts throughout the state, and raised more than $10,000 for the Legacy Fund through pledges and direct donations.

Local resident chosen as Youth Dance Ambassador 2012

Erin Hayes has been selected as the Youth Dance Ambassador for 2012. Through her participation in the recent Dance Troupe Inc. competition, Erin was chosen as the Youth Dance Ambassador and will participate in the Grand National Finals to be held in Savannah, Ga. in July. Erin will have the opportunity to study with top dance choreographers, be a featured performer in the Night of Stars Showcase, and will receive the Youth Dance Ambassador Medal for 2012.

Local student chosen as finalist in the National American Miss South Carolina Pageant

Hannah McCray Earls, age 13, has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss South Carolina Pageant to be held July 12-14 at the Marriott in downtown Columbia. The pageant is held for girls ages 10 through 13.

Howard and Cornelia (Keys) Joy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Nov. 25. The couple was married in Camden and together they have five children: Audrey Joy of Allentown, Pa., Howard Joy Jr. (Nancy) of Dover, N.J., Karen Joy-Wilson (Isaac) of Piscataway, N.J., Michael Joy of Kanas City, Mo. and Gregory Joy (Dana) of Bonaire, Ga. Amateur Radio Club welcomes Gene Faulkenberry

Gene Faulkenberry, director of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), visited the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club's November meeting. Director Faulkenberry gave a brief history on the large scale emergencies that he has seen during his time with Kershaw County. He highlighted Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the train derailment in 1990 and the flooding that occurred when many ponds were breached after heavy rains in 1991.
