Cub Scout Pack 303 held their holiday banquet, sponsored by Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. The program started with Bill Beale leading the Scouts in Christmas carols. Pastor Steve Patterson had the benediction, Cub Master Norman Gullard had the opening ceremony and Jim Bradshaw welcomed guest and leaders. The Scouts had a surprise guest -- Mrs. Santa Claus! She gave each Scout a gift. The Scouts then held an impressive candle lighting ceremony to open the awards ceremony. The following Scouts received awards:
Christmas morning will be happier for hundreds of children in Kershaw County thanks to the efforts of the Marine Corps Reserves' "Toys for Tots" campaign, KershawHealth employees and a host of local partners. More than 900 toys destined for local children were collected during the "Stuff an Ambulance" drive on December 7. The toys will be distributed by volunteers from the Marine Corps Reserves. The goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate children that will help them become responsible, productive andpatriotic citizens.
The famed "Angel of Marye's Heights," Richard Rowland Kirkland of Camden and Kershaw County and his historic deed during the Battle of Fredericksburg in December of 1862 was 151 years ago this December and is still remembered and honored in both Camden and Fredericksburg, Va.
The Hospital Auxiliary of KershawHealth began its annual Lights of Love fundraising project on November 15. The program will continue through Jan. 1, 2014.
Breanna Cole, daughter of Todd Cole of Bishopville and Loretta (Watkins) and Fred Wrigley of Chapin, was chosen along with her varsity cheerleading team of Chapin High School to perform at the recent Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Pregame Performance at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The 20th anniversary Boykin Christmas Parade saw an estimated turnout of between 9,000-12,000 people. With clear skies and pleasant tailgating temperatures, community members were able to kick back, relax and enjoy the day. At the close of the 19th century, a German named Marklin introduced several series of gauged toy train sets that included ready-to-use track sections, locomotives, cars and accessories, plus enticing add-on pieces for future Christmas and birthday gifts. Within two years, Lionel's first electric train was chugging around its track in holiday store windows beckoning all towards the magical world of toy trains.
Lakeside Ministries is an interdenominational worship service supported by Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church. Each summer, collections are donated back to the area communities through local charities. The amount of $3,729 was collected this year and divided among charities that help provide food, shelter, clothing, housing and medical care to community members in need.
The Camden Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. donated $1,000.00 to the Amari Williams' Hope for Healing Hearts Foundation. The donation will help the foundation continue its mission which is to save lives by educating the public about heart disease, promoting early detection and supporting cardiac research. The Joseph Kershaw Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met earlier this season at the Old Armory Steakhouse in Camden to commemorate Veterans Day.
While Christmas is a busy and exciting time for most everyone, it's especially busy and exciting this year for Julia Halford, Phyllis David and Linda Higgins of the local musical ensemble,We Three. The trio will be performing at various Christmas singing events, both locally and out of town. Among those events will be several release parties for its first album Christmas Blessings. The group has release parties scheduled for Friday at Bend Dusty's and Saturday at New Horizons, both in Camden.
The Lugoff Fire Department (LFD) will have the honor of escorting Santa Claus through the neighborhoods in Lugoff again this year. Santa will be escorted through different areas of the Lugoff community each night. Lugoff firefighters enjoy this event each year so children can have the opportunity to see the "Jolly One" before he comes on Christmas night.
