Local quilter semifinalist in international quilt show

Pearl Nester, a Camden resident, has been chosen as a semifinalist for the 2014 American Quilter's Society (AQS) QuiltWeek in Charlotte, N.C., July 30 through August 2, at the Charlotte Convention Center. Nester is a member of the Quilters of Kershaw County, an affiliate member of the Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County. She is married to local artist, member and past president of Camden ART (formerly the Camden Art Association) Edward Nester.

Daughters of the American Revolution presents awards to ‘outstanding’ students

Earlier this year, the Hobkirk Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) met at the Old Mills Courthouse and presented awards to honor outstanding students -- Good Citizen; Good Citizenship: JROTC Scholarship; and American History Essay Contest.

Fine Arts Center's Arts Arising Program in full swing

The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County is proud to produce the Arts Arising Summer Program again this year. This special arts program which began in 1988 through a partnership with the Kershaw County School District, serves third through sixth grade students identified as gifted or talented in visual arts, music, drama and dance. Auditions are held for rising third graders at Kershaw County Schools in January and February, then the selected students are screened through another audition in March at the FAC. More than 120 children from Kershaw County schools are participating this year.

Confederate Memorial Day remembered in Camden

The John D. Kennedy Chapter 308, United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and Joseph B. Kershaw Camp 82, Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) sponsored an observance of Confederate Memorial Day on May 10 at Monument Square in Camden. The guest speaker was Jack Marlar, SCV, Fountain Inn.

Camden, Sumter women part of elite Century Club riding group

On June 1, Cathy Humphries of Sumter and her 29-year-old Arabian horse Mizahrr (Tex) joined a very elite group -- the Century Club. She is the 169th person in the entire US and only the second in South Carolina to become a member, joining Harriet Kiehl of Camden.
