KCSD, Walmart partner again to ‘pack a bus’

Camden Walmart customers know that it's back to school time again when they see the school bus out in front of the store promoting the partnership between the store and the Kershaw County School District to help local needy students receive school supplies. Walmart's annual "Pack A Bus" campaign kicks off Friday and runs for two weeks.

Local veterans respect the flag through disposal

Members of American Legion Post 195, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8346 and AMVETS Post 33 recently joined together for an annual tradition: the disposal -- through burning -- of unserviceable American flags. The ceremony took place at VFW Post 8346's headquarters in Ridgeway, with all three posts participating in different parts of the ceremony.

Auditions set for Kelley’s Fine Arts Camden Crew Junior and Camden Crew Senior Dance teams

Camden Lions Club installs new officers

The Camden Lions Club recently installed new officers and thanked the community for its support of club programs, having collected more than 1,300 pairs of used eye glasses. Boxes are located at the Food Lion shopping center in Lugoff, Rubin Eye Care Center in the K-Mart shopping center, the Walmart Vision Center, Belk and the Food Lion shopping center in Dusty Bend. The club supplied these glasses to local church groups for those in need in Honduras and Guatemela. Camden Lions have also assisted with eye operations and hearing aids for the needy. The karate kid

Lainey Williams, a rising third grader at Camden Elementary School (CES), recently competed in karate nationals in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She is the national champion for kata (forms) and won bronze in kubodo (weapons) and kumite (sparring). This qualified her for Junior Olympics. She is the superregional champion in the 8-year-old female category for kubodo and won silver in kumite, and bronze in kata. She is also the North Carolina Champion in all three events. KC Council on Aging -- ‘focal point’ for seniors in the community

For more than 38 years, the Kershaw County Council on Aging (KCCOA) has provided services and programs for residents in Kershaw County aged 60 and above. These services and programs have been delivered in compliance to the Older Americans Act of 1965, the Administration of Aging, the Lieutenant Governor's Office, South Carolina Network's Policies and Procedures, the Santee-Lynches AAA/ADRC Policies and Procedures and all associated laws and regulations.

Column: Big green city

One of the things I enjoy most about what I do is being invited to cities around the country. Whether I'm speaking at conferences, banding birds or taking part in archaeological digs, I look forward to being able to spend time in places that are different from small town South Carolina.
