Beverly-Hayes Book Scholarship opens doors for seniors
Dr. Camisha Hayes Williams announced the establishment of a $500 book scholarship in memory of her mother, Beverly Hayes Brown, on Feb. 26. Brown was a strong supporter of her community and believed all children should have access to quality education. Downtown Divas Go Red
On Feb. 17 the Downtown Camden Guild hosted the second annual Downtown Divas Go Red for Women's Heart Health Month event. Nearly 100 women participated in the tour of downtown businesses, which included free health screenings provided by KershawHealth hospital. The event was spearheaded by Jennifer Shaw and Gail Carter of First Community Bank.

School programs, students improve with proper support
I would first like to thank everyone personally that supported the North Central and Lugoff Elgin marching bands as they traveled to Disney World in February to march in Disney parades. Both ensembles had great performances and both were very well complimented by the Disney staff, parents, and visitors to the Disney parks. Boykin artist wins ‘best in show’
Denise L. Greer, an artist in Boykin, recently won "Best In Show" out of 79 entries at the Trenholm Artist's Guild (TAG) Show. It is being held at the HoFP Gallery in Columbia. The show will be on display till March 25.

Fred and Gloria Clements were married 60 years ago today on March 14, 1951. Fred is originally from Vesuvius, Va., and Gloria was born in Fort Lawn, S.C. Former Camdenite Manda McKay's painting "Love You To Death" won "Best In Show" at Southworks 2013. The Oconee County Arts Foundation (OCAF) hosted the opening reception April 12 in Watkinsville, Georgia. McKay grew up in Camden and graduated from Camden High School.
LeGrand Institute practices fire safety
Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated the first week in May as Youth Week to honor America's Junior Citizens for their accomplishments.
Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
