Eagle Scout finishes project for Historic Camden

Camden student wins second runner-up in Ms. FMU pageant
Camden High School graduate Delia Davis was named second runner-up in the Ms. Francis Marion University pageant Feb. 21.
2011 Midlands Master Naturalist course to be taught by Jenkins
The South Carolina Wildlife Federation and Clemson University have partnered to present the 2011 Midlands Master Naturalist course. Based out of Columbia, the six-week course will be held each Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. starting May 5 and ending on June 10. United Way program teaches kids to be financially savvy
The United Way Income Care Council integrated a program this week throughout the entire third grade in the Kershaw County to help children learn to manage money wisely.
Calling all readers
Opening night for the annual Friends of the Kershaw County Library (FOKCL) book sale is March 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. for members only of Friends of the Kershaw County Library. For those who are not yet members for 2011, membership may be obtained at the door. The site is the old Piggly Wiggly building on U.S. 1 North, across from the new Piggly Wiggly store in Camden.
L-E ABLE Club hosts auction
Lugoff-Elgin High School football players (from left) Josh Ruiz, Stephan Burnham and Ladricus Turner pose with some of the items available at the second annual ABLE Club Auction, "Surfs Up at Demon Bay." More than $36,000 in products and services have been donated for the event to be held in the L-EHS gym Friday. A limited number of tickets are on sale in the school's Wellness Center; tickets are $25 each and include catering by Outback Steakhouse.
Strike up the Camden Community Concert Band
The Camden Community Concert Band will present its Winter Concert Sunday at the Performing Arts Center at Camden High School. Start time is 3 p.m. Admission is free. Featured soloist Mike Clyburn will play the Jackie Napper Flugelhorn to "Let It Be Me." On left, Flutists Helen Walker, Barbara Rearden and Jane LaRoche practice for the performance.
Winners of Miss Camden Pageant announced
The Miss Camden Pageant was held Saturday at Camden High School. The winners were (from left) Blythe Neal, Miss Camden Teen 2011; Sallie Pierce, Miss Camden 2011; and Carley Powers, first runner-up to Miss Camden. Neal is an 8th-grader at Camden Middle School. Pierce is a sophomore at the University of South Carolina. Both young ladies will be competing in the Miss South Carolina Pageant in Columbia June 28 through July 2.
FAC seeks submissions for Bassett Gallery’s 2011-2012 season
The Bassett Gallery at the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) is now accepting artist materials for consideration as part of a group exhibition or possible solo show in the Bassett Gallery to be scheduled from September 2011 through May 2012.
Spring Step Show to be held March 12
Family Life Outreach presents its annual Spring Step Show featuring the Lil Diamonds and Rho Chi Kobras of Camden, Sigma Beta, Hartsville High, Lancaster High, St. Andrews, E.L. Wright and also a praise dance competition. This will be the final curtain call for the Rho Chi Kobras' Shakeem and Shynell in Camden.
Restaurant service before integration
The late Mr. Moses Williams and his wife, Mrs. Lottie Williams, were a trailblazer family for ending segregation in Camden and Kershaw County restaurants. I am going to give an overview picture of significant and historic events of a family making a difference from the Knights Hill Community on three different important cases.
Knights Hill community recognized for academic achievements
For 11 of the 18 years between 1952 and 1970, the first- or second-ranked students at Jackson High School came from the Knights Hill Community, and this is not counting other students ranked among the top five in the class. This is unique and historic, having this many top-ranked students from one community. Two additional years have now been added, 1958 and 1970. Those recognized are as follows:
SCSDB students SWING! into action in musical stage production
Students at the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind (SCSDB) hit the stage earlier this week for a swingin' good time! SCSDB students' production of "SWING" was held Thurday. The musical whisked audience members back in time to the Swing Era of the 1930s and '40s in Harlem, NY.
Winners of Miss Gold and Black pageant named
On Feb 5, Camden High School held the Miss Gold and Black pageant. The 34 contestants competed in four categories: application, interview, casual wear, and formal wear. The Cruisin' on the Seas themed pageant was emceed and choreographed by Camden High graduates Christa Campbell Boss and Britton Elliott of Palmetto Dance Center in Elgin. Former Camdenite wins ‘Best In Show’
Former Camdenite Manda McKay's painting "Love You To Death" won "Best In Show" at Southworks 2013. The Oconee County Arts Foundation (OCAF) hosted the opening reception April 12 in Watkinsville, Georgia. McKay grew up in Camden and graduated from Camden High School.
LeGrand Institute practices fire safety
Students at the LeGrand Institute of Cosmetology in Camden received a lesson on fire safety at a recent event at the campus. Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Gardner came out to the school and taught students how to use a fire extinguisher. Local author publishes book about student success in the classroom
Books on Broad will host Jayne Bowers as she discusses and signs Eve's Sisters and Crossing the Bridge: Succeeding in a Community College and Beyond on Thursday, May 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Books on Broad is located at 944 Broad St. in Camden. The event is free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and autographing.
Elks Lodge recognizes 2013 Oustanding Young Students
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks designated the first week in May as Youth Week to honor America's Junior Citizens for their accomplishments.
Hayes Creek Skateboarding Competition
There will be a skateboarding competition Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hayes Creek Subdivision in Elgin. The event is sponsored by Salty's Board Shop in Columbia. The proceeds from the competition will go towards purchasing skateboarding gear for the park in an effort to keep kids off of drugs and keep them off of the streets.
