The Kershaw County Library ran a Food for Fines drive earlier this fall. Patrons with fines were offered the opportunity to reduce the amount they owed by donating nonperishable food items at $1 towards fines per item. The donated food items were given to Christian Community Ministries (CCM) and also to Community of Hope Food Bank in Elgin and Bethune First Baptist Church to help stock their food pantries.
A group of Dabney family members from across the state met in late October to preview plans for a new book, The Dabneys of South Carolina, to be published in early 2014. The event was hosted by Doris Faye Vinson at her home in Camden. The authors of the new book are John Edward Dabney, a native of Rock Hill, who presently resides in New Jersey, and his cousin, Joseph Earl Dabney, a native of Kershaw, who lives in Atlanta. Joseph Dabney is also an award-winning author and writer of several books.
The Fine Arts Center (FAC) of Kershaw County and the City of Camden are pleased to present an evening of entertainment to kick off the Colonial Cup weekend on Friday. Now in its second year, this free and exciting event will begin at 6 p.m. with food and drink vendors along with music on the Town Green. The Root Doctors, a popular cover and dance band, will take the stage at 7 p.m.
Author Sherman Carmichael will visit Books on Broad November 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. Books on Broad is located at 944 Broad St., in Camden. Carmichael's book, Eerie South Carolina, will be available for purchase and autographing. This event is free and open to the public.

Author Solutions LLC, a Penguin Random House company and the world leader in supported self-publishing, hosted its Book-to-Screen PitchFest at the New York City Mariott Marquis Hotel in the heart of Times Square October 25-26. Camden author Doreen Hawkins Heath had the unique opportunity to pitch her story, A Sea of Rage Inside of Me, to representatives from entertainment industry companies.

The Grace Episcopal Church Women have produced its annual Camden calendar with drawings of residences and other significant structures in Camden and its environs. Local artists have generously donated their time and talent to produce the pen and ink representations used in the calendar.
The CamBand Annual Fruit Fundraiser runs from Oct. 31 until Nov. 24 via online order.
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is being observed across the country next week, the week before Thanksgiving. The Kershaw County Housing Partnership is sponsoring the following local events in the hope that all citizens will participate in at least one:
The Camden Garden Club will hold its next meeting on Monday at the home of Donna Freyer. Normally there is a speaker along with a program for members, but this month will be a special hands-on program on making and designing arrangements.
The King Haiglar Garden Club will meet on Monday at 3:30 p.m. Jan Tilford will host the group at 1709 Mill St., in Camden. Virginia Isler and Sherry Sweet-Miller will co-host. There will be a social time with refreshments for all to enjoy.

The United Way of Kershaw County will host its third annual Chili Cook-off Saturday at downtown Camden's Town Green. Music will be provided by Fair Jam from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Reflections from 12 to 3 p.m. Chili will be served from 12 to 2 p.m. Premier sponsors of the event are SAFE Federal Credit Union and Lugoff Automotive Group.
